The new season has renewed optimism in Michael Irvin. Despite last year’s woes, the Dallas Cowboys legend believes that his former team will record a win against the Philadelphia Eagles in week one of the 2025-26 NFL season.
Did Irvin forget that the Eagles won the Super Bowl only three months ago? The same Eagles that dropped 30+ points on both matchups last season?
Irvin remembers all of it. Regardless of the history, the Hall of Fame wide receiver chose the Cowboys over their NFC East rivals and the reigning world champions. Michael Irvin said on The Rich Eisen Show:
[In] Week one—Dallas wins at Philadelphia. Philadelphia [Eagles] is getting pat on the back.
It will not be easy. New head coach Brian Schottenheimer is a complete rookie. Teams that finished .500 or above will view the Cowboys as a team to grab points from, especially the Eagles.
Irvin doesn’t view Schottenheimer as a handicap. His optimism stems from the offseason additions to the Cowboys’ roster.
Owner Jerry Jones added an offensive lineman in the draft and traded for George Pickens from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Pickens on one side, CeeDee Lamb on the other, and Jalen Tolbert in the slot will make life hell for the Eagles’ secondary, Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. Irvin added:
[Have a] Pat on your back [the Eagles]. Good job last year. And Dallas, with the new head coach, focuses in new players. They get down to the little things knocking them down, and they win that game. That’s going to be the opener, Thursday night. That’s going to send everybody crazy.
It’s humbling to see Irvin back believing in his boys once again. He was upset when Jones passed on the chance to appoint his former teammate, Deion Sanders as the new head coach. Michael Irvin said back then:
We lost an opportunity here. I don’t know what happened with Coach Schottenheimer and the Cowboys, but Jerry (Jones) is a shrewd, shrewd businessman, and this opportunity, I’m shocked he did not see. I was pushing for Deion Sanders to be the next head coach, and I still stand ten toes down on that push.
Cowboys vs. Eagles Week One Odds
Irvin may be slightly biased because of his history with the Dallas club, but Vegas isn’t blind. The latest odds suggested that the Eagles will be the overwhelming favorites against their divisional rivals in the opening day fixture at Lincoln Field in Philly.

Both DraftKings and FanDuel sportsbooks view the Eagles as the favorites -7 (-110).

The recent history is on the Eagles’ side. Last year, they defeated Dallas 34-6 in Week 10 and 41-7 in Week 17. Running back Saquon Barkley recorded 200+ rushing yards against the Cowboys en route to a historic 2000+ yard season. Barkley will once again be at the center of attention against the Cowboys.
However, the Eagles must not forget they faced a weakened Cowboys team in 2024. Dallas was without quarterback Dak Prescott, who injured himself early in the season.
Prescott has often been the Eagles’ Achilles heel. The veteran holds a 9-4 record against the Eagles in his NFL career. Jones and Co. will be rooting for him to come clutch this time.
