Lewis Hamilton is one of the loudest voices in the Formula 1 paddock. The seven-time world champion has continued to speak out on various important issues, including education and equality. Following the Spanish GP, the British star met the UK’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street over potential educational reforms.

Hamilton is no stranger in the field of education. In 2021, the F1 star launched Mission 44, an initiative meant to provide opportunities to children in the field of STEM subjects. He discussed his initiative with PM Starmer and Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Philipson.

Lewis Hamilton confessed the hard time he had as a kid in school. The Briton would often feel overlooked by the education system. As such, the Ferrari driver wants to ensure that every student can truly be heard.

I struggled in school and never felt like my voice was heard, that’s why I know first-hand that ensuring every student feels they belong in school is vital.

Lewis Hamilton said, as quoted by Autosport

The seven-time world champion was pleased with his meeting with Keir Starmer. He revealed that the UK government was going to work with Mission 44 and promote inclusivity in the education sector. Lewis Hamilton was full of pride over the work his initiative has done in just a few years in helping bring opportunities to people from underprivileged backgrounds.

I’m grateful that off the back of this meeting, the government has committed to working with Mission 44 to enact change focused on making the education system more inclusive. I’m so proud of how far Mission 44 has come in such a short space of time and the opportunity we have to transform the lives of vulnerable students across the country.

The Labour Party leader recalled that his life was shaped by opportunities he had as a kid, at a time when there was no guarantee of success. Keir Starmer underlined that he wants every child in the UK to get ample opportunities to use their talent and improve their lives, claiming that it was central for his plan for change. The prime minister shared images from the meeting with Lewis Hamilton, and claimed that through these plans, they can fulfill this goal.

I came from a home where success wasn’t inevitable, but the opportunities I had as a kid shaped my life. I want every child to go as far as their talents can take them — it’s central to my Plan for Change. Together, we can give our kids the best chance in life.

Keir Starmer wrote on X

Ample opportunities have always been a hurdle for children from underprivileged communities around the world, not only in the UK. Lewis Hamilton remains one of the first public figures to try and take matters into his own hands. His hardwork has been finally recognised by the UK government. But there is still a long way to go. Hamilton’s initiative will need to expand its activities in the coming months in collaboration with the government to ensure a nationwide reach. Details of such plans are not known yet.
