Next week, the PGA Tour will host the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont. Ahead of that event, 6-time major champion Phil Mickelson has claimed that it could be the last time he plays in this major championship.
The LIV Golfer is one of the top names in golfing history. A 45-time PGA Tour winner, the U.S. Open is one event that has eluded him in his entire career. The “Lefty” has an astonishing 6 runner-ups finishes in this event.
It is also the only major championship he has never won. Before the Masters Tournament this year, he was one of the three active golfers, alongside Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy, who had completed three legs of the career grand slam. With McIlroy winning the Masters this year, the active number is down to two.
This year’s tournament could now be the last chance he has to become a grand slam champion. Ahead of LIV Golf Virginia, a reporter would ask whether this could be his last appearance at his national open. The HyFlyers GC captain claimed that there is a “high likelihood” that it is, but he has not thought much about it.
There’s a high likelihood that it will be but I haven’t really thought about it too much.

This will be Mickelson’s last year of exemption as well. He got a 5-year exemption from winning the PGA Championship in 2021. Given his age, he might not try to take part in the qualifying events next year.

lol, he’s got 36 holes left and then It’s once a year at Masters. And that’s probably too much of him. A complete tool.

He needs to retire and work on his honorary tee shot at the Masters!
— Fred Kimball (@fdarian3) June 4, 2025
He is not missed on the PGA. He is instrumental trying to divide golf. As a golfer he is now irrelevant
— Iain Thompson (@thompson_iain) June 4, 2025
He left Golf a few years ago in my opinion.
— chad welter (@chadwelter) June 5, 2025
I thought he had retired.
— Richard Thomas (@rb_thomas) June 4, 2025
Duh. He won't qualify after this year.

Since his move to LIV Golf, fans have seemingly turned their backs on Mickelson. The LIV Golf star has been criticized several times for his move to the Saudi-backed tour.
Phil Mickelson recently took a swipe at the PGA Tour model
Phil Mickelson is highly active on social media. The 54-year-old golfer keeps on engaging with several topics and shares his thoughts on X. Recently, he would take a major swipe at the PGA Tour model.

Last week, 2025 Masters Champion Rory McIlroy, found himself in hot waters for snubbing the Memorial Tournament hosted by Jack Nicklaus. Following the extreme backlash, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan would come into the defense of him.
The tour’s top boss would speak on the “beauty” of the PGA Tour model and express how it allows players to choose which events they want to play and which to skip. Mickelson would hit back at Monahan for this comment and took a dig at his former tour.
“The beauty of our model” It’s why the PGA Tour won’t ever be able to move throughout the world, why sponsors don’t know what they are buying, why fans haven’t seen all best compete against each other consistently for decades, and why no other sport successfully uses this model. It was great for me and all players but not good for anyone else.
“The beauty of our model” 😂😂

It’s why the pga tour won’t ever be able to move throughout the world, why sponsors don’t know what they are buying, why fans haven’t seen all best compete against each other consistently for decades, and why no other sport successfully uses this…
Mickelson has not been part of the PGA Tour since 2022. He was one of the top names who left the tour on a big-money deal to play for the 54-hole circuit. The only time he plays on the tour these days is during the major championships.
