Former Chief LeSean McCoy believes Patrick Mahomes is still the quarterback to beat even after losing the Super Bowl LVI to the Eagles.

Patrick Mahomes is one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history. He has led the Kansas City Chiefs to seven straight AFC Championship games and four Super Bowl appearances in five years, winning three.

Mahomes constantly topped or finished in the first three in MVP voting during that run until recently.

Pro Football Talk’s Chris Simms compiled his list of quarterbacks, dividing them into categories, including ‘The Caretakers,’ ‘Backup Supreme,’ and ‘Ready To Launch,’ etc.

The top four received the ‘The Core Four’ tag, which included Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, and Patrick Mahomes, in that order. After a long gap, the 29-year-old has fell below third in a list he had topped multiple times since Simms started making them.

LeSean McCoy did not appreciate Simms placing Mahomes behind Jackson, Allen, and Burrow. The former NFL running back played one year with Mahomes in 2019, when the Chiefs dynasty kicked off with a Super Bowl victory.

McCoy argued that “it’s crazy” to think that Mahomes is not the best quarterback in the NFL. Even in his worst season, the former first-rounder played in a championship game since taking over from Alex Smith, and at his best, he played in “a Super Bowl.”

It means Mahomes defeated all three quarterbacks during the Super Bowl runs. The only time he didn’t make it past the championship game was when Tom Brady’s Patriots stopped them in 2018, but he was still voted the league MVP.

Forget the quarterback, this is [Patrick Mahomes’] league, everyone knows that. Any player, running around, talking about—it lives and dies with Kansas City.

LeSean McCoy said on the latest segment of FS1’s The Facility

McCoy confessed that the Philadelphia Eagles were the best team in the NFL in 2024. Despite boasting players such as Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, AJ Brown, and Darius Slay Jr., people still questioned,

Did they have enough to beat the Chiefs [in the Super Bowl]? You get what I am saying? So, I just hate this conversation because it really kills the fact of being elite… In [NFL], you are not comparing yourselves to nobody else but Patrick Mahomes.

Shady rested his case

Why did Patrick Mahomes fall to fourth best in Chris Simms’ quarterback list?

Simms listed Mahomes as the top quarterback in his five previous lists. However, the circumstances were different this time. He called Mahomes “the ultimate winner” on the ‘Chris Simms Unbuttoned’ podcast, but at the same time clarified that the 6x Pro Bowler wasn’t the reason behind the Chiefs winning seven straight games after turning the ball over 11 times in the first 10 weeks of football.

It was Steve Spagnuolo’s astute defensive mind and tactics that kept the Chiefs from losing more than one game all year.

I have a luxury right here of taking a chance and just throwing a ball into the double coverage down the field, right? Or holding the ball too long in the pocket—[because] wait, there was somebody open, but now, I want more. Let me see if I can make something happen. My defense will keep us in the game, right?

Chris Simms said via Joe Dixon of Arrowhead Pride

Dixon, a staunch Chiefs enthusiast, agreed with Simms over McCoy that the defense saved Mahomes a few times.

Regardless of how the regular season ended, Mahomes still led the Chiefs into the Super Bowl. He indeed lost, but this will also give him a chip on his shoulder to lift his fourth Lombardi next campaign.
