The quarterback dynamic in the NFL has shifted in the last couple of years. Patrick Mahomes, often regarded as the GOAT of the current generation of football, may be in danger of being dethroned by his closest rival, Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills.

Last year, Allen almost defeated both the Chiefs and Mahomes in the divisional round. The AFC West giants took home the conference crown by a narrow three-point margin.

Longtime NFL expert Sam Monson believes that despite the loss, Allen has overtaken Mahomes as the quarterback to beat, not just in the AFC but in football. In a recent segment of Check the Mic, Monson argued,

The best quarterback right now is [Bills] Josh Allen… he’s become the guy. For years, it was [Patrick] Mahomes. Obviously, Brady [in the previous] generation, once they went, Mahomes took over.

Monson credited Mahomes for giving football fans some of the best highlight reels during the first six seasons of his career. However, the 29-year-old’s killer instinct dipped in the last two years.

The start of Mahomes’ career was absolutely mind-blowing. The last couple of years, though, he’s not been that guy. Really it’s been Josh Allen.

Monson added

The Chiefs fans will point to four consecutive Super Bowl appearances and three wins to exert Mahomes’ dominance over any other quarterback in the league. However, Allen’s athleticism and vision propelled him to MVP status in 2024.

Former NFL quarterback turned Pro Football Talk analyst Chris Simms ranked Mahomes fourth in his yearly best quarterback list. Simms highlighted that the 6x Pro Bowler piggybacked on an astute Chiefs defense in several games.

In an interview with People magazine before a celebrity golf tournament in Vegas, Allen revealed:

I know people want us to kind of hate each other for what we do and who we play for and how many times we’ve played against each other. But it’s hard to hate such a good dude.

Mahomes recalled the first time they hung out at the Masters and hit it off instantly.

Allen recently got married to celebrity girlfriend Hailee Steinfeld, while Mahomes is a veteran in that field. The 2x NFL MVP tied the knot with high school sweetheart and former soccer player Brittany Mahomes in 2022, eleven months after they welcomed their daughter, Sterling, to the world.

In an interview, Mahomes confessed to wanting a boy as his firstborn. However, his view changed after he held Sterling for the first time.

Growing [up], I wanted to have a boy first, then I had a girl & it’s like God knew exactly what to do with me. He helped me mature as a man. It’s a different bond with a daughter because you’ve got to be that protector.

Patrick Mahomes said

Perhaps Allen and Travis Kelce should ask for some tips before making their big decisions.
