WWE Makes Goldberg vs. Gunther Official for Saturday Night’s Main Event After Heated Confrontation on Raw

Goldberg will step into a WWE ring for quite possibly the last time on July 12 against a formidable Gunther at Saturday Night's Main Event.

The rumors were true, as Bill Goldberg finally made it back to WWE television on this week’s Raw. Just as Gunther was cutting a promo with his first week as the new World Heavyweight Champion, The Icon’s music hit, and the place went bonkers. Goldberg seemed overwhelmed by the reception of the crowd in Green Bay.

After telling The Ring General how proud he was of him, Goldberg reminded the Austrian of something that the latter started with his family the last time they met. The WWE HOF’er was alluding to their confrontation at last year’s Bad Blood PLE, where the erstwhile Walter talked trash about him in front of his wife and son, Gage. That being said, Goldberg affirmed he’ll end it where it all began—Atlanta, Georgia.

On July 12, The Icon will challenge The Ring General for the World Heavyweight title at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Even though WWE isn’t promoting it as one, this showdown is expected to be Goldberg’s wrestling swansong. It’s something that the former Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle had been wanting for a long time. He hasn’t wrestled since 2022, when he succumbed to Roman Reigns at the Elimination Chamber PLE in Saudi Arabia.

Gunther will be an entirely different ballgame for a 58-year-old Goldberg, who recently claimed he’s working through severe body pain. The Vienna-born wrestler is as relentless as they come, and he’s expected to double down on the task at hand in due time. Gunther may have been left speechless last night, but that bell has to ring, and that’s when he excels.

WWE releases new merch for Goldberg’s upcoming in-ring return

In the wake of Goldberg‘s in-ring return against Gunther, which is believed to be his last match, WWE has released some new merchandise for The Icon. The fans might’ve noticed that the Tulsa native was wearing a never-seen-before tee on Raw with a majorly white background and black making up for the sleeves. Moreover, “Goldberg’s Last Ride” was emblazoned on the center of it.

WWE Shop has made two more tees available, as seen in the following post. A few months ago, it was alleged that WWE might ask him to retire at any of the Saudi Arabia shows due to his immense popularity in the Middle East. However, Goldberg made it clear in an interview that he wanted to hang up his boots in front of his own people and family.

The former WCW Champion even said that he dreamed of possibly staging his last match in Israel but had to pull back due to the ever-lasting political conflicts over there. Goldberg would’ve stayed away from the squared circle if it wasn’t for WWE CCO Triple H approaching him about it. The WCW legend was salty about his previous fallout with WWE back when Vince McMahon was still in charge of things.

Former WWE star backs massive crowd reaction for Goldberg on Raw amid online unrest

There’s quite a fascinating dichotomy about Goldberg’s return between the online wrestling audience and those who were in the arena for the show. While one could scroll through X and find nothing but netizens lambasting WWE for allowing the 58-year-old to have a crack at Gunther’s world title, those in attendance seemed to have loved it.

Former WWE Superstar James Ellsworth posted on X that no matter what one thinks of Goldberg, he could still get one of the loudest reactions while walking into an arena. Ellsworth seems to be on board with ‘Da Man’ chasing the world title for the last time at Saturday Night’s Main Event in Atlanta.

Another factor to take into account would be an imminent cash-in threat from Seth Rollins, who’s Mr. Money in the Bank, and has enough backup by his side. Whatever it might be, The Ring General is likely to find himself in a massive disadvantage with Goldberg and Rollins to thwart at once.
