On Monday, Rory McIlroy officially qualified for Team Europe’s Ryder Cup squad. While he was always likely going to be the first name on the team sheet, he has now officially sealed his place in the team.
The Northern Irish golfer has had a mixed season in 2025. Following a blistering start where he won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February, The Players Championship in March and the Masters Tournament in April, his form has dipped.
Following a T47 finish at the PGA Championship, he ended up missing the cut at the RBC Canadian Open, a week before the U.S. Open. During the third major of the year at Oakmont, the golfer once again struggled and barely managed to make the cut. He eventually finished T19 while being 7-over for the tournament.
Despite these poor results in the last few weeks, McIlroy’s strong start has earned him a place in the Ryder Cup Squad. At the Bethpage course in New York this year, he will make his 8th consecutive start in this biennial tournament.
After his place was confirmed, he would take to his Instagram account to make his feelings known. He shared a 5-word message while tagging Captain Luke Donald.
I’ll see you at Bethpage @lukedonald

In the 2023 edition, McIlroy was the top point scorer for his team. With a 4-1-0 record, he collected 4 points as Team Europe triumphed 16.5 to 11.5 over Team USA.
Rory McIlroy addressed his decision to skip media interviews after rounds
In the past few weeks, Rory McIlroy has found himself under heat from the golf community for his decisions to skip media interviews and not talk to the reporters. After doing this again during the U.S. Open, the 5-time major champion did address this decision of his.

After his driver was found to be non-conforming before the PGA Championship, he would skip talking to the media after all 4 rounds. While that has played a part in this decision of his, the former World No.1 expressed that he was just frustrated.
No, not really. It’s more a frustration with you guys. I’m just, yeah, I don’t know. I have, I’ve been totally available for the last few years, and I’m not saying, maybe not you guys, but maybe more just the whole thing.
When asked by a reporter if he had earned the right to skip this interviews following his huge success, the 35-year-old admitted yes while smiling.
I feel like I’ve earned the right to do whatever I want to do, yeah.
During the tournament, he would also face heat from the fans for his actions on the course. After a poor shot at the 12th hole, he would throw his club away. A little later on the 17th, he would smash the tee box in anger.
Paige Spiranac defended Rory McIlroy following backlash for skipping media interviews
After skipping a few more media rounds, Rory McIlroy finally spoke to the media at the U.S. Open. After he explained his decision to skip those rounds, he faced even more backlash on social media. Paige Spiranac would later come to his defense.

The social media influencer, who has often picked McIlroy as her favorite to win a competition, would repost a tweet on X. In this, she would back the grand slam champion for not talking to the reporters as he was not required.
Might be an unpopular opinion here but he doesn’t have to talk to the media if he doesn’t want to. It’s not required. And why would he when everyone is always analyzing and criticizing his every move. There is clearly something more going on none of us are privy to so maybe let’s not all pile on

Unlike the other sporting leagues, PGA Tour stars are not obliged to speak to the media after the round. So technically, McIlroy can skip the media rounds without facing any disciplinary actions.
