The Washington Commanders shocked the NFL with their performance last year. A team that was placed at the bottom of the NFC East, winning just 4 games and having thrice as many losses, turned its fate around and went on to win 12 games and lose just 5. The Commanders went on to qualify for the NFC Championship but lost to the reigning Super Bowl Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

Rookie Jayden Daniels shone throughout. He finished with 3,568 yards and 25 touchdowns. But his intangibles proved that he is bigger than those numbers. From being calm as a cucumber in critical situations to leading his team as a positive influence, there is nearly no category in which Daniels disappointed.

This year, Daniels gets a new star on offense. The arrival of Deebo Samuel is positive for the Commanders’ offense. For years, Terry McLaurin has been the only consistent option at receiver position in Washington. With Samuel in the mix, the offense opens up, and head coach Dan Quinn has more options to choose from while calling plays.

At a recent appearance at the Fanatics Fest, Daniels was asked how he feels with Samuel as his wide receiver. Sitting amongst NFL royalty, Joe Montana and Dan Marino, the quarterback could not hold his happiness back. His face visibly lit up with a smile before he responded.

I’m excited to throw him a screen and hopefully on the stat sheet it says a touchdown for 80 yards and I didn’t have to do any of the work.

Jayden Daniels joked

He is certainly optimistic about his new receiver’s skill-set. Samuel is perhaps more excited than Daniels to embark on this new chapter of his career.

Coming off a rough season, Samuel finished the last three seasons with under 1,000 receiving yards. Staying healthy has been a recurring issue for the wideout.

However, Samuel is gunning for vengeance this season. The receiver has made it a mission to have a phenomenal season ahead. The wideout’s recent video has worried some fans because Samuel looked a bit ‘puffier’ and slower while running.

Washington’s offense will play on another level if Samuel and Daniels end up having great on-field chemistry. The NFC East has witnessed quite the turnaround in the past few years. The Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles were always at the top, but now the Commanders have snuck in there, and made the division more competitive.

Daniels will face a new set of challenges in his sophomore year. With a full season of game film available, defensive coordinators will have ample material to study his tendencies and develop strategies to limit his effectiveness. Fortunately, the addition of Samuel allows the Commanders to run more options offensively.

Samuel has been impressed by Daniels and compared his composure to that of a veteran.

I feel like the man’s been here forever. He’s comfortable, he knows what’s going on; he knows where the ball needs to go. I just think he’s very smart.

The duo has bonded well and shares a sense of mutual respect. Samuel will enter the free agency market next season, which is why he has to play great this year. Washington will have a busy off-season as 37 of their players entered the final year of their contracts in 2025. Out of the 37, 20 players are starters or key pieces. The Commanders’ Super Bowl aspirations depend on how the team restructures its roster.
