Three months have passed since the New York Jets cut Aaron Rodgers from their team, and yet, first-year head coach Aaron Glenn launched a fresh attack on the 41-year-old by comparing him with his replacement, Justin Fields. Rodgers’ former Green Bay Packers teammate James Jones condemned Glenn’s unnecessary dig at the Super Bowl winner.

Jones shared the locker room with Rodgers for a number of years in Wisconsin and understands him better than most. He is well aware that Rodgers wasn’t at his best while wearing the green of the Jets, but that doesn’t give Glenn the license to take digs at a four-time NFL MVP.

Jones found it shocking and “foul.”

He slightly took a shot at [Aaron Rodgers]. Aaron is not in the building no more. You should just be worried about your young quarterback [Justin Fields] developing and playing well because, to be honest with you… You have put all your eggs in the Justin Fields basket, and if he doesn’t have success, we are pointing the finger right at you [Aaron Glenn].

James Jones said on FS1’s The Facility

Glenn has given Fields his due praise for being a positive influence in the Jets’ training camp. Jones wants nothing more than the best for the former first-rounder, but the Jets are his third team in three years, so he needs to show something to justify the two-year deal he signed in the offseason.

The Jets owner tasked Glenn with installing the winning mentality that propelled his former team, the Detroit Lions, to consecutive NFC North titles. Glenn’s first significant move was getting rid of Rodgers, whom he addressed as a celebrity quarterback.

He reckoned Rodgers’ stardom would not be a good fit with his philosophy. Fields, to him, is on the opposite end of the spectrum. Despite entering his fifth year of his NFL career, he is still as raw as a rookie quarterback. So, Glenn has the opportunity to mold him into a franchise quarterback.

In a recent article published by The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt, he documented Glenn’s veiled dig at Rodgers.

[Justin is] not trying to be the celebrity quarterback; he’s just trying to be himself. And whatever comes with that, it comes with it. So, he’s not trying to impress anybody. He’s going out there, and he’s busting his [expletive] trying to be the best quarterback he can be for this team. Everybody sees that—and I like that.

Aaron Glenn said

Initially, Rodgers sounded upset by Glenn’s treatment when he flew down to the Jets’ facility earlier this year to talk about business.

That was kind of strange. I’ve flown across the country, and 20 seconds in, he goes, and he leans to the edge of his seat and says, ‘So, you want to play football?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m interested.’ And he was like, ‘We’re going in a different direction at quarterback.’

Rodgers signed for the Pittsburgh Steelers right before the minicamp. During his first press conference as a Steeler, he faced the dilemma of answering questions regarding the Jets. However, he refrained from criticizing the team that the Steelers will face in week one of the 2025 NFL season.

Only time will tell which direction the two teams will choose. One outcome is already certain—Rodgers might retire in 2026. Then again, if the Steelers win the Super Bowl against all odds, then it’s possible that Rodgers might reverse his decision.

Tom Brady did after he won his seventh ring with the Buccaneers. He played two more seasons following the victory in 2020.
