Max Verstappen‘s 2025 campaign only seems to be getting worse. The Dutch driver had a terrible start to Red Bull’s home race in Austria with a P7 finish in Qualifying. However, things were even worse in the main race. The reigning world champion was forced to retire on the first lap after being hit by Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.

Verstappen had a decent start as the five red lights went out. The Red Bull driver managed to move to sixth place after Turn 1. The 27-year-old was having his own race as the pack headed to Turn 3. Unfortunately, Max Verstappen was struck by Kimi Antonelli. The Mercedes driver misjudged the braking zone and collided with the Red Bull. The Dutchman completely spun around after making contact, with too much damage to continue to continue.

The reigning world champion was in no mood to stay calm following the incident. Max Verstappen straightaway lashed out on the team radio. He informed the team that he needed to retire the car. The 27-year-old used some profane language, calling Antonelli an ‘idiot’ as he was out of the race due to the Italian driver’s mistake.

I’m out. I got hit like crazy. **** idiots.

The 18-year-old apologized on the team radio for causing the collision, admitting that he lost control on the rear of the car. Antonelli understood that he was to blame for Verstappen’s retirement. He even went to have a conversation with the reigning world champion once the two were out of their cars.

Sorry about that. Locked the rear.

Race control has not made any comments over Kimi Antonelli’s crash just yet. It is likely that the stewards will take a look at the incident after the race. While it can be considered a racing incident, the move ruined Max Verstappen’s race despite the Dutchman not doing anything wrong. Fans should not be surprised if race control decides to hand the Mercedes driver a grid penalty for the next race.

On the other hand, the DNF is a major blow to Max Verstappen. The 27-year-old is already under immense pressure in the battle for the world championship against the two McLarens. This crash has only made things tougher for the Dutchman. While Red Bull is left embarrassed at its home track. Now, Verstappen will need some standout races in the coming weeks to stay in contention for the title.
