“Devi and I are probably very similar,” John McEnroe on narrating ‘Never Have I Ever’

John started his new career of narration in the Netflix comedy show 'Never Have I Ever"
If you have followed tennis for even a small amount of time, there are high chances you’ve heard of John McEnroe or his unbelievable achievement of having won 77 singles and 78 doubles titles, which remains to this date the highest combined tally in the Open era.

However, he is found in a very different role nowadays, besides also contributing to his beloved sport.
John is now narrating a coming-of-age comedy co-created by Mindy Kaling, about an Indian American teen named Devi ( Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) who wants to become popular at all costs within college. John’s choice as Narrator seems out of place before we get to know that Devi’s late father was actually a great admirer of the American.
While on a video chat, McEnroe discussed on many varied topics, from his unexpected career as a voice artist to his own youth and how he got selected for the narrator role.

“You cannot be serious” is how John reacted after listening to the offer he had on the table. John also added that across the years, many people have recognized the tennis legend by his voice and that he was pleasantly surprised when he heard from co-creator Mindy Kaling. He added that he accepted the offer because he likes doing things that are outside his comfort zone.
When asked what he did to keep his voice in good shape, John responded that drinking loads of water is a key thing and his wife is a singer and that helps keeping the diet a bit voice-balanced.

“Jack Nicholson. He’s my favourite actor and I would like to know what his thoughts would be like,” said McEnroe when asked who he’d like to be the narrator if a young-age movie was ever to be made on the tennis great.
John also laughingly added that Devi and him are probably very similar in the sense that he was girl-crazy but I didn’t have much to show for it. “I was sports-crazy — obviously, I was the best at tennis, but I played high school soccer, I played high school basketball, I played all the sports growing up. I was just a big jock-type guy. And I always was thinking: “Why don’t these girls understand how cool a guy they’re getting here?”
