After being undrafted and playing in minor or lesser-known leagues for some time, KaVontae Turpin life took a turn for the better in 2022. The return specialist and wide receiver was selected by the Dallas Cowboys and became a quick hit with a Pro Bowl selection in his rookie year.
After a decline in 2023, KaVontae Turpin produced his best performance in his short history in the NFL. He played all 17 regular-season games and managed to record 420 receiving yards from 31 receptions and two touchdowns. He also led the league in kick return yards with 904 yards and powered a Week 12 victory over the Washington Commanders with a 99-yard kick return touchdown.
In light of his best season and a second Pro Bowl recognition, the Cowboys had even extended his contract for another three years. The sunbreak in the middle of the bad storm seemed to have been taken over by darker nimbus clouds.
On Saturday, Turpin was arrested by the Allen Police Department on two misdemeanor charges.
He was taken into custody at the Collin County Jail on charges of possessing less than two ounces of marijuana and unlawfully carrying a weapon. After posting a $1500 bond, he was released from custody on Sunday.
The usage of marijuana for recreational purposes is illegal in 26 states in the country, including Texas. As per Texas law, possession of marijuana less than 2 ounces is treated as a misdemeanor and punishable by up to 180 days’ imprisonment or a fine of $2000. Possession of more than 4 ounces or sale of more than 7 grams is considered a felony and has associated punishments.

The nature of the weapons charge is currently unknown. Nevertheless, a general offence is considered a misdemeanor unless the said weapon is carried in restricted areas. The Cowboys haven’t commented on the issue yet.
The recent charges are not KaVontae Turpin’s first confrontation with law
KaVontae Turpin had previously made headlines in 2019, a short while after the end of his career at the TCU Horned Frogs. On March 15, the return specialist was arrested in Las Cruces, New Mexico and charged with battery against a household member, criminal damage to household property valued under $1,000 and interference with communication services.

He had pleaded not guilty to the battery and the property damage claims. Despite the same, TCU Horned Frogs, led by Gary Peterson, allowed Turpin to play for them through the season. He was dismissed from the team when the second charge came to light in the fall of 2018. Turpin was arrested for battery involving his longtime girlfriend.
According to an affidavit from the Fort Worth police who responded to the 911 call, Turpin reportedly dragged the lady across the parking lot and slammed her to the ground. In 2019, Turpin pleaded guilty to the charges and signed a plea agreement.
As part of the agreement, Turpin received two years of deferred adjudication probation and completed a 27-week Partner Abuse Intervention Program.
In light of the troubled background and recently updated rap sheet, Turpin’s future with the Dallas Cowboys could be in jeopardy. A section of fans has already called for the team to drop the Louisiana native. The NFL usually waits until all legal proceedings are finalized before punishing the player according to its Player Code and violations.
