As the PGA Championship takes place this week, the spotlight has once again fallen on Jordan Spieth. Ahead of the event, the 3-time major champion made a “weird” comment on Monday as he tries to complete the career grand slam once again.
Up until the Masters Tournament last year, Spieth was one of the three active golfers who had completed 3 legs of the career grand slams. Along with Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson, he was chasing the career grand slam.
McIlroy ended up beating Spieth and Mickelson in this race as he won the Masters Tournament. This saw him become just the 6th player in history to win all 4 major championships.
This week, Spieth will attempt to complete the feat once again. When asked about this in the pre-tournament press conference, the former World No.1 made a “weird” comment and claimed that the easiest way to do it was not to think about winning.
As far as the career Grand Slam, this tournament’s always highlighted. If I can win one more tournament in my life, it would obviously be this one for that reason. But the easiest way to do that is to not try to, in a weird way, you know.

For Spieth, the PGA Championship is the one that had eluded him. In 2015, the American international claimed his first major win as he won the Masters Tournament in April. Two months later, he would clinch his 2nd major title by winning the U.S. Open.
In August, he found himself in contention for the PGA Championship as well. He was 13-under par, 2 strokes behind Jason Day after 54 holes. In golf’s long history, only twice has a player won 3 majors in one year.
The two golfers were Ben Hogan in 1953 and Tiger Woods in 2000. Hogan won the Masters, the U.S. Open, and the British Open while not competing in the PGA Championship.
Meanwhile, Woods achieved a record-breaking win at the U.S. Open before coming out on top at the British Open and the PGA Championship. In April 2001, he went on to win the Masters and became the first player to hold all 4 majors titles, a feat which is now known as the Tiger Slam.
So Spieth was chasing history at the 2015 PGA Championship. He, however, was unable to close out the deficit and ended up as the runner-up, 3 shots behind Day.
In 2017, Spieth won the British Open with a 3-shot victory. Since then, he has been chasing the win at the PGA Championship. Over the years gone by, he has suffered a huge slump in form, undergone wrist surgery, and looked like a shadow of his former self.
The one major problem for Spieth is that he has been winless since 2022. The golfer’s last triumph came at the 2022 RBC Heritage. He has also not finished inside the top-10 this year.
The 32-year-old has had some moments. At the Cadillac Championship, he was T3 heading into the weekend. A score of 75 in the third round derailed him. With a final round score of 70, he finished T18 in the signature event with a 7-under par score.
At the Truist Championship last week, Speith struggled again. He posted scores of 71, 71, 68, and 75 in the 4 rounds and finished T52nd.
Jordan Spieth claims his situation is different than Rory McIlroy’s in the grand slam pursuit
Jordan Spieth will get another shot at golf immortality by winning the PGA Championship this week. After a reporter brought up the grand slam pursuit and dropped the name of Rory McIlroy, the American claimed his situation is different than the current World No.2.

In the press conference, the golfer explained that McIlroy had led the Masters Tournament before, unlike him at the PGA Championship. McIlroy was the 54-hole leader at the 2011 Masters Tournament. However, he imploded in the final round and finished outside of the top-10. He even had some runner-up and top-10 finishes.
That performance had bugged McIlroy for several years. So when he finally won the green jacket in 2025, he broke down in tears.
Spieth, however, has never been the outright leader in the PGA Championship. Apart from his runner-up finish in 2015, the only other time he has finished inside the top-10 at this event was in 2019, when he finished T3, 6 shots behind Brooks Koepka.
As a result of this, the golfer believes his situation is different compared to McIlroy’s.
I don’t think so. My situation was certainly different than his at Augusta. … Rory’s was obviously a very unique final round and his history of having led there and stuff like that, so I don’t think it would feel similar.

Last year, Spieth missed the cut in this event. His best finish in the past five years was T29 in the 2023 edition. His other finishes during this period are T30 (2021), T34 (2022), and T43 (2024). If he were to script history this coming Sunday, he would need a huge performance.
