On Wednesday, Anthony Volpe made his 2026 season debut for the New York Yankees. It, however, did not go as planned, as he went 0-for-3 with the bat. To make matters worse for him, he committed a defensive error in his first game back.

Last season was a tough one defensively for Volpe. The shortstop had several huge miscues while playing in the shortstop position, leading to many fans on social media slamming him.

In October, he underwent surgery for a serious shoulder injury. This ruled him out at the start of the 2026 season. The Yankees then turned to Jose Caballero for the shortstop position.

Caballero proceeded to have a strong defensive showing in the month of April. As a result of this, the team opted for Volpe to remain in the minor league following his rehab assignment and play for the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

However, Caballero recently got injured. As per an MRI scan on Tuesday, the 29-year-old had a fracture in the right middle finger. This landed him on the 10-day injured list. With him out for a while, the AL East side called up Volpe.

The return to the big leagues for Volpe did not go the way he would have hoped. In his first game back on the team, he made a fielding error while going hitless against the Baltimore Orioles.

The error from him came during the 8th inning when the O’s were leading 7-0. On a 3-2 pitch from Ryan Yarbrough, Leody Taveras hit a ground ball.

Volpe, who scooped down to collect the ball, would wobble it. The 25-year-old was unable to make the play leading to the Orioles star reaching first base on a defensive error.

The error from Volpe, though, did not lead to any more runs. Coby Mayo popped out to first baseman Ben Rice before Weston Wilson‘s forceout and Blaze Alexander‘s strikeout ended the inning. The Yankees ended up losing 7-0 in a clash against their division rivals.

Last season, Volpe had a -6 Outs Above Average (OAA). Only outfielder Jasson Dominguez had a worse OAA for the Yankees than him in 2025, with -9 and -8 in Runs Prevented.

According to X account TalkinYanks, the New York side did not have an error in the shortstop position since April 13. They have now made one in just the first two games without Caballero.

Speaking of the team, the Yankees have now lost 5 of their last 6 games. This has seen their season record go from 26-12 to 27-17.

Up next for them is a massive clash with the New York Mets. The two rivals will lock horns in the Subway Series this weekend at Citi Field.
