In just the fifth month of the season, Jannik Sinner has won five ATP Masters 1000 titles at an unprecedented pace, which represents a real physical and mental test. There are four Masters yet to be won in the men’s circuit this season, two of them in the US and the remainder in October. Sinner has admitted that it is unrealistic to win all nine ATP 1000 titles this season.

Sinner became the second man to complete the Career Golden Masters on Sunday (May 17) after defeating Casper Ruud in straight sets at the Foro Italico at the Italian Open. The 24-year-old joined Novak Djokovic as the only player to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 events since the inception of the event in 1990.

Sinner first claimed a Masters title at the Canadian Open in Toronto in 2023. At just 21, he overcame Alex de Minaur in straight sets to become just the second Italian man to win an ATP 1000 title since Fabio Fognini at the 2019 Monte Carlo Masters. The victory came after two final appearances at the 2021 and 2023 Miami Open.

The triumph at the Canadian Open sparked an impressive run for Sinner the following year, where he won three Masters 10000 titles. First in Miami, then in Cincinnati, and then in Shanghai. Last year, he claimed the Paris Masters after missing out on four ATP 1000 tournaments due to suspension.

This season, he has been on a rampage, winning five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments, which is a mind-blowing achievement. With Carlos Alcaraz sidelined due to injury, he has taken advantage of that to win the Madrid Open and Rome Masters. Speaking to the media after the Rome triumph, Sinner noted that winning all nine Masters titles this season is not his main goal:

We have to take it one tournament at a time. The most important thing is to be in good physical shape, because otherwise you won’t get anywhere. It’s not realistic to think about winning all nine Masters 1000 tournaments. It’s impossible to maintain this level throughout the entire season. The most important thing is to feel good physically. Before Wimbledon we won’t play any grass tournaments. After that, Canada we’ll see, but it’s unrealistic.

Winning five Masters 1000 seems the biggest challenge to players let alone winning the whole nine. Sinner will have to prioritize his physical health after the semi-finals scare at the Italian Open, where he was gasping for air. The World No.1 is a serial winner but has to monitor his physical and mental health.

Jannik Sinner opens up on how he always wants to win titles after every tournament triumph

Jannik Sinner, 24, completed his Career Golden Masters seven years younger than when Novak Djokovic accomplished the feat. Over the past seven months, Sinner has dominated the ATP Tour by clinching the Paris Masters, Indian Wells, Miami Open, Monte Carlo, Madrid Open, and Rome Masters.

However, after each title triumph, the 24-year-old always looks forward to claiming another title, which is absolutely mind-blowing. His willingness to put the last title behind him and become hungry for another has made him the standout player this season. He revealed during the aforementioned press conference that the euphoria of winning a title lasts two or three days:

It depends on the moment. Now, I know that I can disconnect for two or three days and that happiness lasts those two or three days. But in our sport, everything changes very quickly. You can lose the thread at any moment. Happiness doesn’t depend on a tournament. That is part of clarity. I congratulated myself But sometimes, even after losing, you can congratulate yourself for the tournament you played.

Sinner will have a week’s rest before heading to Paris for the Roland Garros, which kicks off on May 24. The Italian star has the opportunity to become the first player from his country to complete a Career Grand Slam, cementing his place in history as one of the greatest players to have ever competed in the sport.
