In Short
  • Jaylen Brown criticized ESPN analysts, labeling them as 'clowns' for creating clickbait content.
  • Kendrick Perkins shared messages from former Celtics players expressing disagreement with Brown's recent comments.
  • Stephen A. Smith questioned Brown's accountability and motives behind his criticisms after a disappointing postseason.

When Jaylen Brown took shots at Stephen A. Smith on his live stream, the Boston Celtics star also called out former player and current ESPN analyst Kendrick Perkins.

The California Golden Bear labeled both the ESPN analysts and others like them as ‘clowns.’ He claimed that these so-called media members try to build clickbait content to generate interest.

Even though they claim to be helping the sport, Brown believes they help no one but themselves. Naturally, after such an explosive rant, there was bound to be a response.

Stephen A. Smith started off First Take by calling out the 6’6″ guard for doing the exact same thing he is accused of, just in a different setting. The 58-year-old even threatened Brown by suggesting he would reveal all the secrets he knows. Then it was Perkins’ turn.

I get another text that says, ‘Hey, JB trippin.’ Another text from a former Celtics player that said, ‘JB, lack of accountability.’… JB, guess what? It’s a lot of people in the organization, a lot of former players, legends, that don’t agree with you, bro!… This instance, I can’t rock with you, JB.

Kendrick Perkins said

Since he was with the Celtics for the first eight years of his NBA career, the former center has good relations with many former teammates and with former players.

He may have burnt some bridges, but Perkins has enough of them to make it clear to Brown that not many former players agree with the latter’s methods. Perkins believes the guard has hurt his brand with the manner in which he speaks. Therefore, he believes the 29-year-old should check himself.

Stephen A. Smith harps on Kendrick Perkins’ pointers about Jaylen Brown

A while after First Take wrapped up, Stephen A. Smith took to his namesake podcast to talk about this entire fiasco involving Jaylen Brown.

He’s targeting me… Did Jaylen Brown say that when I was raving about him all season long? Did he say that when I had him as a top two MVP candidate?… Did he challenge my journalism then? No, he did not… Being home must be very, very frustrating, and he’s looking to exhale.

Stephen A. Smith said

Towards the end of this response, the father of two continued to harp on Perkins’ point that many former players do not rock with the five-time All-Star’s opinions.

Smith questioned why Brown had no questions about the former’s journalistic integrity when he was supporting the guard time and again. He wondered whether this was a selective attack on him, or maybe Brown was frustrated about ending his season early and decided to take it out on Smith for clicks.

Jaylen Brown’s comments did not sit well with many

The reason Kendrick Perkins pulled up text messages from former Boston Celtics teammates was to remind Jaylen Brown how they did not appreciate his comments about this past season being his ‘favorite year.’

Perkins felt that whatever Smith or he, or anyone else, said about those comments was right. For someone to say that after exiting the postseason in the first round was egregious.

Any player worth their weight would not say such things, as generally, they should be remorseful for not doing more when the spotlight shone brightest. Instead of that, Perkins felt that Brown talking about his ‘favorite year’ and the complaints about officiating was a true show of a lack of accountability.

That explains why many other analysts flamed the Celtics star for those comments, as none of them felt it was right to say those things after a tough first-round loss.
