- Caitlin Clark was ruled out of a game due to a back injury just two hours before tip-off, causing frustration among fans.
- Head coach Stephanie White stated that Clark experienced stiffness and soreness, emphasizing caution in her recovery.
- Fans accused the Indiana Fever of manipulating information to avoid ticket refunds, leading to claims of "organizational malpractice."
Entering this season, there is no doubt that Caitlin Clark is looking like her older self, dominating the league and breaking records almost every other night.
Last season, her fans were left hanging about not being able to see her give them moments of excitement after her soft-tissue injuries stopped her from suiting up in most of the 2025 season.
But this time, they are raving every day as Clark continues to prove that she is a worthy candidate to battle for this season’s regular-season MVP awards.
In the midst of all these records, fans have noticed that the Iowa native has managed to capture back some of her three-point scoring form.
However, they have also noticed that in the season-opening loss against Paige Bueckers‘ Dallas Wings, Caitlin Clark did run towards the medical room quite a few times.
Even though head coach Stephanie White tried to dismiss those fears, some felt the Fever weren’t being honest. In fact, the point guard was not on the injury report on the night before their game against the Portland Fire. Then, two hours before the game, it changed.
Just woke up with some stiffness and some soreness… It’s not the time to take a chance. We just really want to be cautious.

Any concern beyond today? “No, there’s not — or I don’t know.” pic.twitter.com/DBkULtQVIm
The head coach confirmed that they realized at 5 pm that their most important player was not going to be fully healthy to play against the Fire.
Fans take issue with Fever’s handling of Caitlin Clark’s absence
Stephanie White also mentioned that Caitlin Clark had missed yesterday’s practice, as she was getting treatment. She did go through her workouts after her teammates were done, but it was enough proof for fans to flame the Indiana Fever.
They felt that this was intentional manipulation by the organization to keep fans from cancelling or asking for refunds on tickets. Fans felt that the franchise was doing a disservice to its fans with these decisions. Check out examples of those reactions below.
Organizational malpractice. You guys have people spending hard earned money to see the goat and wait till the last minute to announce she’s not playing. When are people going to be fired in this organization? I cannot wait till she leaves and goes to a real organization.

This is borderline Orwellian. How can you simultaneously be healthy and not also be out because of back issues?

That’s concerning when she says no there’s not but then follows up with I don’t know

Man, she needs to find a new performance team. You come back from a groin injury, the last thing she should have problems with is her core. It's the foundation of any sports performance program.

My ticket is gone . Why not make this announcement since morning

What kind of word salad is this????

They last played 3 days ago. She woke up with stiffness today? After not practicing yesterday? None of this adds up.

LOL, this hilarious….1 hour before game time, people already locked in to their tickets and travel…de ja vu from last year? Yup

Even Caitlin Clark has been coy about her health, mostly dismissing any questions about her wearing a leg sleeve during practice, and other things.
It now seems to fans that the Fever is intentionally masking what is truly going on with her. Either she is struggling with injuries, and they are trying to avoid it becoming the narrative. Or, they are managing her body to ensure she lasts the season.
Stephanie White dismisses Caitlin Clark’s injury management narrative
After initially pointing out why Caitlin Clark would not play against the Portland Fire, reporters asked Stephanie White whether the Indiana Fever were managing the superstar’s injuries.

No, absolutely not. There’s no managing. She’s healthy. We’re not managing anything. This is just a back issue that we want to make sure we give the time to be ready.
Stephanie White replied

The 48-year-old was categorical when denying that they are managing Clark’s injuries. However, since the organization has been generally coy about everything surrounding their two-time All-Star, it seems fans will wait to see whether this happens to be true or not.
