In Short
  • Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever lost their season opener to the Dallas Wings, drawing significant viewership.
  • Analyst Tyrone Johnson controversially claimed Clark's performance is akin to "Linsanity," suggesting she will struggle this season.
  • Despite initial criticism, Clark's strong performance in the second game prompted praise from opposing coach Lynne Roberts.

Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever opened the 2026 WNBA season with a loss in front of their home fans to Paige Bueckers and her Dallas Wings.

It was a great scoring battle with both teams going back and forth throughout the contest. At no point did it seem as if one was going to relinquish the chance of beating the other.

Clark and Bueckers are close friends, but have also been rivals since college. They know how to tune out the outside noise and do what they like to do best, play basketball.

But the league decided to pair them as rivals, ensuring this game received a prime-time slot. No wonder the game managed to draw the second-most number of viewers since Clark and Angel Reese drew 2.7 million last season.

Among those viewers, many noticed how the Fever point guard kept going back to the medical room every chance she got. The team, and Clark herself, dismissed narratives of there being any return of last season’s troubles. On the other hand, one analyst saw something that led him to say this:

The Caitlin Clark thing is over. Because she’s not the best player in the WNBA… she’s not even the best guard from her college class… She’s Jeremy Lin. This is just Linsanity. She’s gonna fumble this.

Tyrone Johnson said on The Craig Carton Show

Johnson claimed that Paige Bueckers was the better guard in Clark’s class, and that is what shone in their season opener. He believes that the latter’s ‘Linsanity’ run is over, and she will struggle this season.

Caitlin Clark’s performance leaves Sparks’ head coach full of praise

Naturally, such a bizarre claim was going to be met with immense backlash, and so it did. Many fans flamed the Craig Carton Show for allowing Tyrone Johnson to spew such rhetoric.

But even if the analyst was to stick by his opinion, Caitlin Clark‘s performance in the Fever’s second game of the season against the Los Angeles Sparks was enough to change his stance. It was that good that even Sparks’ head coach Lynne Roberts waxed lyrical about her.

She is unique, and when the ball crosses half-court, it’s her scoring zone. We have our hands full. You can’t lose sight of her for half a second… As much as her scoring and shooting are a threat, her passing is even more dangerous.

Lynne Roberts told reporters

For an opposing head coach to say this is enough to let Johnson’s bizarre analysis be thrown out of the window. The Fever guard torched the Sparks with her shooting, while also sending in blinding passes for her teammates to feast on.

Johnson may have some logic when he noticed Caitlin Clark struggling to play to her potential. After 24-points, 9 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block, any question marks should be banished.

Caitlin Clark praises improved WNBA officiating

One of the points Tyrone Johnson touched upon is how Caitlin Clark goes about wasting a lot of time complaining to officials. The two-time All-Star received a technical foul in this game against the Sparks, but made it clear the officials were not wrong.

The refs were calling it,… I appreciate that… The refs are doing a tremendous job. I deserved the technical they gave me. It’s great for the game

Caitlin Clark said

This was a remarkable shift from the times when the 24-year-old’s complaining even left her father and her fans disappointed with her at times.

Moreover, acknowledging that she deserved to get that technical foul also speaks of maturity. If this is the new and improved version of Caitlin Clark, she might force even her critics to swallow their narratives.
