- Kenny Atkinson will return as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third season despite criticism from fans.
- The Cavaliers struggled in the Eastern Conference Finals, leading to calls for major changes within the team.
- Analysts suggest the team needs roster adjustments and a re-evaluation of strategies to become contenders.
In the space of a season, Kenny Atkinson has gone from being the league’s Coach of the Year to becoming a subject of criticism and trolling.
The Cleveland Cavaliers poached the former Brooklyn Nets head coach from his job as an assistant to Steve Kerr on the Golden State Warriors. Helping to win the 2022 championship was the highlight of his career, which is why the franchise felt that he was the right man to lead their potent team.
After injuries stopped them from reaching their potential last season, the hope was that this Cavaliers team was up for the challenge of upsetting the New York Knicks to reach their first NBA Finals since the LeBron James era.
The unfortunate part is that the franchise’s passionate fans saw how their team struggled to hold a candle to the Knicks in the two home games. That last blowout loss was an embarrassment to anyone associated with the team.
At a time when fans and analysts were asking for major changes, Shams Charania confirmed that the Cavs decided to bring back Kenny Atkinson for a third season.

The ESPN Insider pointed to the 58-year-old’s franchise-best win-loss record, which was the defining factor despite the ‘ugly’ way they ended their season.
Keeping him will stabilize the roster and allow him another chance to build on what Kenny Atkinson has done so far. That team has the players, but needs a few tweaks, scheme-wise and on the roster, to push through.
Fans tear into Cavs for keeping Kenny Atkinson
Basketball fans know that Kenny Atkinson has been able to help the Cleveland Cavaliers take the next step in their quest to win their second-ever NBA championship.
However, the embarrassing losses in the Eastern Conference Finals were enough of an indication that the New York native may not have the answers a contender needs.
On top of that, if the Cavs wanted any more proof that they should let him go, all they needed to do was replay his bizarre analytics-driven explanation after trailing 0-3.
Fans felt that such delusion is the last thing a contender needs. They tore into the franchise for ignoring those obvious red flags. Check out examples of those below.
Not surprising since he’s won back-to-back analytical NBA titles.

My sources are telling me that Kenny Atkinson brought his leftover timeouts from Game 1 to the exit interview.

The #Cavs brass was so impressed with his stubbornness, they decided to bring him back. The analytics love this decision.
According to James Harden they won the series. I think thats why Coach Atkison is coming back. He got them to the NBA finals through analytical means.

The Cavs continue to be a POORLY ran franchise! Bron was smart to leave for good

Kenny Atkinson might rethink his schemes and game plan before training camp for next season starts. He might be able to help the Cavaliers reach the NBA Finals. But his work alone might not get them there.
Cavs need Giannis Antetokounmpo, says Brian Windhorst
The Cleveland Cavaliers need a few changes to their roster, and the most obvious name being thrown around is LeBron James. Brian Windhorst stated that even though the franchise’s fans want that, it is almost impossible, as they only have the veteran minimum to offer.

The King has proven he is worthy of another $50 million deal. However, the Cavs can pivot to another star who can elevate them to being worthy contenders.
I don’t think it’ll be long before you start to hear Cavs attached to Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The longtime analyst pointed out that the franchise expected Evan Mobley to be their version of the Greek Freak. Since that has not happened, Windhorst does not see it as a problem if they offer the forward in a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo.
With the latter, Atkinson can rest assured of having one of the most motivated players in the league. That alone can be a game-changer for this team.
