Odell Beckham Jr. is back with the New York Giants. The Giants held a veteran tryout on Monday at the facility. At the end of the day, they signed OBJ, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and former Dolphins and Texans wideout Braxton Berrios to one-year veteran minimum deals.

Giants drafted Beckham 12th overall in 2014. After five seasons and 59 games, the Giants traded him to the Cleveland Browns. From there, he went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Ravens, and Miami Dolphins.

Beckham has played 119 games over the course of ten seasons. He registered 575 receptions for 7987 yards and 59 touchdowns.

Previously, OBJ admitted that he never wanted to leave New York; the trade hurt him on a personal level. It worked out in his favor. In 2021, he won a Super Bowl ring despite tearing his ACL.

Of course, he would love to win a chip with the team that gave him the chance to experience NFL football.

Did the Giants make a mistake by signing Odell Beckham Jr.?

Beckham is a proven wide receiver. And he’s open to sharing the workload with other players. He won’t demand the ball all the time like AJ Brown, giving the younger players a chance to grow.

However, not everything is sunshine and roses. There are a few downsides to adding OBJ to the roster.

Odell Beckham Jr. is no longer the dynamic wide receiver that he once was

Beckham returns to the Big Apple as a wise hermit who has learned a lot playing in different systems. But head coach John Harbaugh said the Giants aren’t getting OBJ, but OBJ 2.0. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. Then again, it’s not a good indication either.

He’s 33 and soon will be 34. Meaning, he’s unlikely to go past younger corners like he used to back in his heyday. Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has handled older receivers before at the Kansas City Chiefs, but their records weren’t anything special.

For example, Hollywood Brown caught just 49 passes for 587 yards in 16 appearances in 2025, and he is far younger than OBJ. Having Beckham on the team sounds great, but the Giants fans shouldn’t get too excited.

More so, because he hasn’t played competitive football since the Dolphins released midway through 2024.

Beckham might steal playtime from younger players

Regardless of the controversy Jaxson Dart has ignited in recent days, the second-year signal caller is the Giants’ starter and the face of the franchise. As a coach, Harbaugh should make Dart play with receivers around his age group.

G-Men boast a deep receiver core with young guys like Jalin Hyatt, Isaiah Hodgins, and Beaux Collins. Not to mention, the Giants also added Calvin Austin, Darnell Mooney, and third-round rookie Malachi Fields earlier in the year. If Beckham were to play, one or maybe even a couple of players could be released.

Raises questions about Malik Nabers’ availability

Let’s not mince any words, Malik Nabers is the best receiver the Giants have. The LSU alum caught 109 passes for 1204 yards and scored 7 touchdowns in his debut league campaign. Analysts and fans expected him to record an even better year in 2025. However, he suffered an ACL injury and missed a chunk of the year. He is still recovering from the injury.

He’s in the middle of it. It’s such a hard thing. It’s an ACL, and whatever else he had in that knee. Not a simple knee [injury], you know? So, he’s in the slog of it, the grind of it, I would say. So, he’s fighting through it, and he’s here every day working hard at it.

John Harbuagh said via The Sporting News

Signing Beckham is a clear indication that Nabers is not in a position to start in week one. If that’s the case, then it’s a massive blow for a team that doesn’t want to miss out on playoff qualification for the fourth straight year.
