Pope Leo XIV visited Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on June 8 as part of his apostolic journey to Spain, making a highly anticipated appearance at the home of Real Madrid after recently expressing his admiration for the club.

The pontiff was welcomed by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who presented him with a personalized jersey bearing the number 1 and the name “Robert F. Prevost,” a nod to the Pope’s birth name. The two posed for photographs alongside Real Madrid’s collection of European Cup trophies, while Pope Leo XIV presented Pérez with a commemorative medal.

The Santiago Bernabéu later hosted a large religious gathering attended by thousands of faithful. The event featured prayers, scripture readings, musical performances, and appearances by members of Madrid’s diocesan community. Pope Leo XIV arrived in the evening, greeting attendees before delivering an address from a stage set up inside the stadium.

During his remarks, the Pope drew a parallel between football and the gathering’s spiritual message. He said, “For a football player, scoring a goal in this stadium is something that marks your life. Today, the Church of Madrid has scored a goal for good.”

The visit formed part of Pope Leo XIV’s June 6–12 pastoral trip to Spain, which included stops in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands. The journey marks the first papal visit to the country since Pope Benedict XVI traveled to Spain in 2011.

Real Madrid also commemorated the occasion by unveiling a limited edition jersey inspired by the pontiff. The shirt features “León” and the Roman numeral XIV on the back, reflecting the papal name Robert Prevost chose following his election. Matching shorts and socks were also released as part of the collection.

Pope Leo XIV says Madrid Church ‘scored a spectacular goal for all time’ during Bernabéu gathering

Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message on faith and evangelization during a gathering at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, telling thousands of worshippers that the Church in Madrid had “scored a spectacular goal for all time.”

Speaking before more than 80,000 attendees inside the iconic Real Madrid venue, the pontiff used a football analogy to emphasize the impact of the Church’s mission in modern society.

“For a soccer player, scoring a goal in this stadium is a moment that leaves a bit of a mark on your life. Today, the Church in Madrid has scored a spectacular goal for all time,” Pope Leo said.

The event brought together representatives from parishes, religious movements, and dioceses across the Madrid region. Young people performed a football-themed presentation, while several members of the faithful shared personal testimonies about their faith journeys.

Using the occasion to address the challenges facing Christianity in the 21st century, Leo urged believers not to isolate themselves within familiar communities. “To reach the heart of the city, we must cultivate the awareness that truth is symphonic and always transcends us,” he told the crowd.

The pope stressed that effective evangelization begins with a personal relationship with Christ, warning that faith risks becoming routine when believers lose sight of that foundation. “Seeking and following him is the condition for proclaiming him; otherwise, there is no evangelization,” he said.

Leo also encouraged Catholics to embrace diversity within the Church rather than seek uniformity. Referencing the biblical story of the Tower of Babel, he contrasted human attempts at forced unity with the harmony that comes from faith.

Quoting St. Teresa of Ávila, the pontiff offered a message of encouragement to those facing uncertainty. “Let nothing trouble you, let nothing frighten you,” he said.

The Bernabéu gathering was one of the final events of Leo’s stay in Madrid before continuing his trip to Barcelona. Earlier in the day, he visited Almudena Cathedral, where he presented a Golden Rose to the image of the Virgin of Almudena, a rare papal honor recognizing centuries of Marian devotion in the Spanish capital.
