A month after extending general manager George Paton‘s tenure, the Denver Broncos have signed Head Coach Sean Payton to a new five-year contract through the 2030 season. A Super Bowl-winning head coach with 7 years of coaching experience, including 27 years in the NFL on various levels. Payton spent 15 years coaching the New Orleans Saints and took the Broncos job in 2023.
In his first season, Denver finished third in the AFC West, posting an 8-9 record. Payton moved on from veteran Russell Wilson and drafted former Auburn and Oregon quarterback Bo Nix in the first round of the 2024 draft. Nix led the Broncos to a 10-7 season and an appearance in the playoffs.
Denver improved further in Payton’s third year. The Broncos won their division for the first time in a decade and reached the conference title game, where they lost to the New England Patriots. After three seasons as the Broncos’ coach, Sean Payton has posted a regular-season record of 32-19 (.620) and a 1-2 postseason record.
Sean Payton delivers a title in his fourth year
The Broncos came ever so close to winning their first AFC Championship game since the 2015-16 season when Peyton Manning was the team’s quarterback. However, the Broncos were dealt a major blow right before the game.
Nix hurt his ankle and missed the fixture against the Patriots, forcing Payton to rely on Jarrett Stidham, who hadn’t played a single snap for nearly eighteen months. Denver lost the game. The results could have been different if Nix had played.
Payton is entering his fourth year with the Broncos. At the end of his fourth year with the Saints, he became a world champion. The Broncos have improved from last year, and with a relatively easier schedule, it’s a great opportunity for them to win the elusive Lombardi Trophy once again.
The Broncos need a winner like Sean Payton to survive in a division that has Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid
Payton knew very well that the AFC West is one of the toughest divisions to win in football. That’s because it has the Kansas City Chiefs—a team coached by Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes as its starting quarterback. Together, they have dominated the West, winning ten consecutive titles, appearing in 5 conference championships, and 4 Super Bowls, and winning 3 times.

Payton and the Broncos managed to break the cycle. Although the Chiefs had a down year (6-11), the Broncos had to outpace the Los Angeles Chargers to win their division.
2026 will be even tougher. Not only do the Broncos have to deal with the Chiefs and the Chargers, but the fourth team in the group, the Las Vegas Raiders, no longer feels like a bad team. So, that’s why the Broncos made the right choice by extending Payton’s contract.
Sean Payton can turn Bo Nix into one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL
Not everyone can become Sean Payton’s quarterback. They have to meet certain requirements. In New Orleans, Payton worked with Drew Brees. The former second-round pick reached the pinnacle of NFL quarterbacks under Payton’s guidance. Brees won a ring and is the only quarterback to throw 5000 yards five times in their career. He rightfully took his place in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Russell Wilson was Payton’s first QB in Denver. However, they never managed to stay on the same page and eventually parted ways. Payton’s search for Brees 2.0 led to Nix. Payton said via DNVR:
The thing about Bo Nix is he loves playing. It is contagious. For 15 years, I had one personality, and Drew Brees could not be more different. There is a competitive nature about him that is refreshing.
Nix is still raw and can develop into a great quarterback. He also has one advantage over Brees—he uses his legs far better than the 13x Pro Bowler. Nix already has scored 9 rushing TDs, while Brees registered 25 in his entire two-decade-long career. But that’s just a minor detail. What matters is the silverware. With Payton at the helm, Nix and the Broncos are on the right path to challenge the Chiefs, Chargers, and the Raiders.
