Joe Gibbs Racing veteran Christopher Bell was one of the drivers in the limelight on Sunday, as he was coming into the race at Pocono with a wrist injury owing to the violent crash last week at Michigan. Unfortunately, the day didn’t pan out as they planned, as he finished P26 after running out of fuel in the final lap.

One key issue that affected the No:20 team negatively was the them going out early in qualifying, unlike his teammate Denny Hamlin who won the pole and went onto win the championship. The restarts were a major hindrance for the TRD team, but it wasn’t because the injury and it had more to do with his overall racing on the day.

Going out early to qualifying really hurt us, and then I could never make ground on the restarts, and ultimately, I was in the twenties. I do think my wrist had an effect on the restarts and stuff like that.

Christopher Bell told media post-race.

Adam Stavens, the crew chief of Christopher Bell, made the challenging decision to take a fuel gamble. It didn’t pan out as expected as on the last lap, then went from fighting Tyler Reddick and Denny Hamlin for P1 to finish outside the top 25. The car didn’t have enough for the racer to execute what was asked from him.

I just tried to do what he (Adam) was telling me to do. He’s got the SMT data on what my throttle percentage is, what the RPMs are. Just didn’t have enough.

Christopher Bell added via Frontstretch.com.

Further talking about the point, the star driver admitted that it wasn’t one of the “what could have” races he had more times than he wished this season. It was a gamble, from team that was outside the top-20 on the regrading pace, not paying off. That hasn’t killed his confidence though, as he knows his time to get back to winning ways is closer.

This was not a would have, could have, should have. I’ve had a lot of would have, could have, should have this year, but not this one. That was just a gamble, and we ran we ran around 20th all day. I applaud him (Stevens) on rolling the dice and trying to do it… The year hasn’t gone our way, so whatever the future holds, it holds. I feel confident that our time will come.

Christopher Bell asserted.

Christopher Bell explains how wrist injury affected his race on Sunday

Later in the same conversation, Bell explained how the injury affected his race. He admitted that he was deprived of the ability to make quick corrections in tricky situations as he was better when he racing by himself compared to racing in the pack.

Whenever I banged with the No. 21 (Josh Berry) or whatever getting into (turn) 3, and then that wreck in front of me, I just don’t really have the ability to make sharp, quick corrections to the car Whenever I’m by myself and we got single-field out, I felt like it didn’t bother me, but I certainly think it affected my resources.

Christopher Bell said.

The comments from the racers shows, if his wrist doesn’t cure soon, he would have more tough moments on the track when the situation demands aggressive moves. It would be interesting to see how everything is going to playout for the star drivers in the coming days.
