Philadelphia Phillies stars Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber demolished the New York Mets on Saturday. The two superstars recorded historic feats as their team blew away their division rivals 15-3.

Harper started the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. This turned out to be his 16th home run of the season. Doubles from J.T. Realmuto and JP Crawford in the second inning saw the Phillies take a 3-0 lead.

It was the third inning where the carnage began. Schwarber hit his 26th home run of the season as he smashed a shot 456 feet into the right field off an 86 mph changeup from Freddy Peralta.

The Phillies kept on collecting hits. A double from Harper and a single from Brandon Marsh saw them take a 5-0 lead following a fielding error. After Alec Bohm flew out, the Phillies had doubles from Bryson Stott and Realmuto, which gave them a 7-0 lead.

Gabriel Rincones Jr. would strike out for the 2nd out of the inning before a walk of Crawford, and a single from Trea Turner saw Peralta exit the game. Cionel Perez came in to replace him on the mound for the Mets.

Schwarber came up to bat again in the 3rd inning. Just like his previous at-bat, he went yard again. This time, he smashed a 457-foot home run. He thus became just the 67th player in MLB and the second this year after Yordan Alavarez to hit 2 home runs in one inning.

Harper then hit a single and was a triple shy of the cycle. After Marsh grounded out, the inning ended with the Phillies scoring 8 runs.

In the 5th inning, after Schwarber hit a single, Harper came up to bat. The former National League MVP hit a sharp line drive. As Turner and Schwarber raced home, Harper sprinted towards third base. This saw hit for the cycle.

However, there were some on social media who debated this. As the runner threw the ball home, some on the internet claimed that it should be a double on a fielder’s choice. However, it went down as a triple, giving Harper his first cycle in his career.

This is the second cycle of the year. Chicago Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong hit one this past Monday against the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field. Harper also became the first player to complete the cycle in 5 innings since Adrian Beltre in 2015.

There was still some time for more fireworks. In the 8th inning, Schwarber smashed his 3rd home run of the night by hitting the ball down the right field line.

Schwarber eventually went 4-for-5 with 6 RBIs. Harper, on the other hand, contributed 3 RBIs while going 4-for-5 as well.

As per OptaSTATS, the Phillies became the second team in MLB history to have a player hit for the cycle (Bryce Harper) and one player hit 3 home runs in the same game (Kyle Schwarber). The first team to do so was the New York Yankees.

On June 3, 1932, Tony Lazzeri hit for the cycle for the Yankees. This performance of his was overshadowed by Lou Gehrig, who crushed 4 home runs for the Bronx Bombers in that game. The Yankees ended up winning 12-1 against the Chicago White Sox.

The Phillies, who had lost 10 games in a row in April, have seemingly found their rhythm back. With the win over their struggling division rivals, they are 41-35, 7.5 games behind first-place Atlanta Braves, who are 48-27 for the season.
