Marketa Vondrousova Alleges ITIA Tried to ‘Prove Their Power’ After Criticism over ‘Soft Approach’ Toward Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek

Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek tested positive for banned drugs clostebol and trimetazidine, respectively, in 2024.

Marketa Vondrousova is in shock because she will have to waste four years on the sidelines. She refused an anti-doping test last year on December 3, for which the International Anti-Doping Agency (ITIA) handed her a four-year ban.

Vondrousova, in her defense, claimed she was hit by severe anxiety and stress when the female doping control officer came to her home at 8 pm, when she was alone in her apartment. A few days after ITIA’s announcement, Vondrousova gave a lengthy interview to iSport, revealing her side of the story.

The 26-year-old stated the doping control officer simply said, “ITF doping,” and did not show her ID card, nor did she ask for Vondrousova’s ID. After the former World No.6 denied her entry into her apartment, the officer told her she would only leave if the tennis ace signed the refusal paper. Vondrousova said she quickly signed the paper under stress, and that the officer did not behave “professionally” but “aggressively”.

The WTA ace also said that had the officer’s conduct been proper, things would have turned differently. Vondrousova repeatedly criticized the ITIA for the way they handled her case. According to her, ITIA wanted to prove how powerful they are after facing heavy backlash for the way they handled Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek‘s cases.

After what happened with Iga Swiatek and Jannik Sinner, when everyone was criticized for their soft approach to the stars, they wanted to prove their power over me. And they proved it. It is extremely important for me that people know that the commissioner admitted to the misconduct during the interrogation. That is 100% true. ITIA cannot now claim that it was a properly conducted inspection. Do they think that I will collapse and not defend myself?

Vondrousova is considering approaching the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to challenge ITIA’s verdict. Simona Halep did the same in 2023 after being slapped with a four-year ban by the ITIA for testing positive for the banned substance Roxadustat. Halep won the case and the CAS reduced her ban to nine months.

Emma Navarro knocks out Iga Swiatek at the Bad Homburg Open

Once again, Iga Swiatek’s campaign this season has ended in disappointment. In the ongoing Bad Homburg Open, the Pole, who lost to Jessica Pegula last year in the final, fell in the opening round. Emma Navarro clinched a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over the first seed.

Yeah, it’s tough. It’s warm out. The ball is kind of flying. There’s not a ton of rhythm. I think both of us felt that throughout the match, so it came down to a lot of serving, and I relied on my serve there at the end. And it ended up getting me through.

Emma Navarro said during her on-court interview

The win helped Navarro tie her head-to-head record over the former World No.1 to 1-1. Navarro will lock horns with Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the quarterfinals.

She has been enjoying a decent form since the Strasbourg Open, as there she finally ended her title drought by defeating Victoria Mboko in the final. Before entering Bad Homburg, Navarro lost the Nottingham Open final to Marie Bouzkova. Navarro is chasing the first grass-court title of her career in Bad Homburg.

But Swiatek is not at all enjoying a good form this season. The only time the six-time Grand Slam champion reached a semifinal this year was at the Italian Open. Next is Wimbledon, where Swiatek will be competing as the defending champion (she double-bageled Amanda Anisimova last year). The four-time Roland Garros champion last lifted a title at the 2025 Korea Open.
