Holger Rune was entered for Wimbledon when the list of players was released last month. It was supposed to mark his second tournament after taking part in a warm-up event on grass. But the Danish star has decided to once again postpone his return to competition, and this time around, with no definite date for his comeback.

Rune has been away from the tour since last October due to an Achilles injury he suffered while competing at the Stockholm Open. The Dane was seeking a place in last year’s ATP Finals when he decided to play consecutive tournaments, which later led to an injury that sidelined him.

It was reported earlier this year that he might be back during the clay-court season, as there has been significant progress in his recovery. However, his return was then postponed to the grass-court season, particularly at the Wimbledon Championships. But in the process of hastening his recovery, a scab revealed a secondary knee issue.

That caused a setback in his recovery, which means he’s likely to be back on the court after the US Open. Nonetheless, following the setback, Rune doesn’t want to push for a quick return, opting to be patient with his recovery process, no matter how long it takes. He was spotted a few days ago training with Jannik Sinner in Monte Carlo.

Speaking to Tennis Channel in an interview, he explained that he has already begun stepping onto the court, playing for a few hours to make sure his feet and Achilles recover well and are in good shape. He added that perhaps the injury happened at the right time, as it has given him the needed break from tour:

We are already playing points, having full two-and-a-half to three-hour sessions. My foot and Achilles feel good, I am no longer injured, now it’s about optimizing and getting ready to compete again. I remember that last summer I thought I would like to have two months to delve into my tennis and train properly. Obviously, if I had never been injured, I would have never stopped. There was a higher force that decided to give me that time to come back stronger.

Rune reached the final of the Indian Wells Open last year, losing to Jack Draper in the final. He had defeated Carlos Alcaraz at the Barcelona Open, winning his first clay title of the 2025 season. His impressive form would have seen him get a slot in the ATP Finals if not for the injury in October.

Holger Rune gives his take on Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s dominance this season

Holger Rune’s absence from competitive events doesn’t mean that he’s not following the sport. The Dane has been following the progress of this year’s ATP Tour and has been watching Jannik Sinner dominate the men’s circuit in the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, who suffered a wrist injury in April.

Closely watching and analyzing Sinner and Alcaraz’s games has made him realize that the two stars have some weaknesses. During the aforementioned interview, he noted that he has the game to beat them on the court and that when at his best on the court, he constantly adapts to his opponent’s style:

I have many weapons and I need to use them. Changes of pace, drop shots, aggressive play, and even defensive shots. When I played my best tennis, I was able to constantly adapt to each opponent and situation.

Sinner will feature at Wimbledon next week after being away from your events since Roland Garros. He will enter the grass-court Grand Slam after a shocking second-round loss at the French Open against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. The Italian star is the defending champion of the tournament.
