Going into the inaugural street race at San Diego Navy Base, almost everyone in the community was expecting a Shane van Gisbergen masterclass. But Fate had other plans, as the veteran wrecked out early in the race alongside teammate Connor Zilisch, eventually helping 23XI Racing part-timer Corey Heim to secure his maiden Cup win.
It was a disappointing moment for the No:97 Chevy driver, who has only won one race in 2026 and is in chase bubble. Ahead of the Sonoma weekend, the Kiwi talked about last week and admitted that he is still pissed about missing out a solid opportunity to win. But he worked hard behind the scene to rest for this week and it has given him the confidence back.
I feel pretty good today. It took me a couple of days, for sure. Pretty pissed about that with a good opportunity gone wasted. The best thing about the sport is it either brings you back down to earth pretty quickly or picks you back up. You can race the next weekend and reset. Feel pretty reset today.
Shane van Gisbergen said on Friday at Sonoma.
Further talking about the point, Shane van Gisbergen asserted that he would have a solid opportunity win and increase his point tally this Sunday. He is concerned about his position in the cutline is hoping that his Chevy would be good enough this weekend to earn him the momentum back to thrive in the remaining road course races of the year.
I know I have a good opportunity to win the race and we will look at the points after. We really need a good weekend. That hurt us on that cutline. Need to get some momentum going again and hopefully this weekend starts it and puts us in a good position for the last few races.

Shane van Gisbergen is determined to redeem himself
In a separate conversation mid-week, the Trackhouse Racing driver talked about how the incident ruined their races last Sunday, in a time when their car was getting better. If they hadn’t had the average start, they would’ve gotten wrecked by Austin Hill.

Still pretty shitty after the weekend. Two weeks in a row, taken out by the same spud. It sucked. Tough one. We had a pretty average start to the race. I wasn’t doing very well and I struggled, and then it felt like our car was coming alive. Potentially, we were back in the race, and unfortunately, got taken out. So, yeah, that su**ed. Pretty gutted — everyone is. Both of us — Connor and myself, ended up wrecked, but yeah, it happens.

The three times Supercars champion spent a couple days in LA to reset himself after the disappointment. They No:97 crew gathered at the athlete canter and had some practice sessions, which might inspire them to find the redemption moment this Sunday.
Trying to reset, a couple of days here in L.A. with Red Bull, which is awesome, getting to check out the athlete center. The guys are doing some pit stop practice, and then we’ll head up to Sonoma probably Thursday, and try to redeem ourselves a bit.
Shane van Gisbergen added.
The comments from the veteran are on point and shows how determined he is to make a comeback to the victory lane. It would be interesting to see how the Sonoma weekend is going to playout for the entire Trackhouse garage.
