The ‘June Swoon’ hit the New York Yankees at the very end of the month. On Tuesday, the team suffered a 6th straight defeat as they lost 9-3 against the Detroit Tigers. Following the game, manager Aaron Boone opened up about the “c***** week” the team had.

In the 2025 season, they stumbled a bit in June and lost their footing in the division race against the Toronto Blue Jays. This year, they suffered a major blow at the start of the month with the loss of captain Aaron Judge through a rib fracture.

Last week, the Yankees improved to a 48-31 record after winning 2 out of the 3 against the Tigers at Comerica Park in Detroit. Since then, the Bronx Bombers have been on a losing skid.

They first got swept in a 4-game series against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. This came at a time when the Red Sox had been at the bottom of the American League East standings.

With a 7-3 loss on Monday, the Yankees suffered their 5th straight defeat. On Tuesday, they had their ace pitcher Cam Schlittler go up against reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, who had just returned from injury.

Schlittler, who has taken the league by storm this year, had a poor outing. He conceded 3 home runs in the first inning itself.

There were some defensive woes as well. The Tigers opened the scoring with a solo home run from Kerry Carpenter in the first inning after Spencer Jones dropped the ball over the wall. The ball bounced off his glove for a home run, leaving the outfielder shocked.

There were some boos around Yankee Stadium in the 6th inning following a fielding error from Jose Caballero. After fielding a routine ground ball, he threw it away at second base, allowing the Tigers to have runners on second and third base. A pitch later, Riley Greene crushed a 3-run home run to make it a 9-1 game.

The Yankees did pull 2 runs back, but that was not enough. They ended the month of June with a 6th straight defeat and fell 2.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays.

Offensively, the Yankees had just 4 hits on Tuesday. In the 4-game sweep against the Red Sox, they got outscored 21-9.

In the post-game conference, Aaron Boone admitted that it had been a rough few days for the team. The Yankees manager then expressed that the team had been chasing uphill a lot in recent games.

This week’s been rough, there’s no sugar coating it. What’s that? Six in a row. We almost pulled one out at Fenway, but otherwise I feel like we’ve been chasing uphill a lot. … This week’s been pretty crappy.

Aaron Boone told the reporters

This 6-game losing skid is the Yankees’ longest losing streak this year. Before this, the team had lost 5 straight games in April, including a sweep by the Rays.

Yankees script unique piece of history following 9-3 loss against the Tigers

The team’s offense has gone down in recent games. They have registered just 16 hits in their last 5 games and managed to score just 12 runs.

As per Katie Sharp, the Yankees are the first team to have a 5-game span with 0 wins, 45-plus strikeouts, and 16 or fewer hits. Before today, no team in MLB since 1898 had gone through such a slump.

Their 12-14 record in June marks the 3rd time in the last 4 seasons where they have finished this month with a losing record. The only time they were above .500 in June in recent years was in 2024, when they went 14-13.

Following this series against the Tigers, the Yankees will face the Minnesota Twins. After that, they will have a huge 4-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. They will be hoping to avoid a repeat of last year, where they got swept by division title rivals Toronto Blue Jays before the All-Star break.
