Something is going wrong in New York for the Yankees. On Sunday, the team got swept in a 3-game series by their division rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays. This was their 5th successive loss, leading to their record falling to 8-7 for the season.
The Bronx Bombers kick-started the year in hot form. They swept the San Francisco Giants in a 3-game series. They outscored their opponents 13-1 in the opening series. After losing to the Seattle Mariners in the series opener, they won 4 straight games with series wins over them and the Miami Marlins.
After winning 5-3 against the Athletics last week, the Yankees were 8-2. It seemed like another series victory was on the cards for them. They, however, lost the second game of the series 3-2, thus making the encounter on Thursday a rubber game.
In that match, the American League East was dominated by the A’s. The Yankees had no answer to starting Jeffrey Springs. The New York-side managed just one hit as they lost 1-0 and dropped the series.
A day later, they lost 5-3 against the Rays. Jazz Chisholm Jr. then proceeded to blame the cold weather for his slow start to the season.
Jazz Chisholm JR. on early season struggles “It”s cold, it’s literally all it is… I’m not using it as an excuse. As soon as the weather heats up, I heat up, that’s what it is… it’s hard to function when you can’t even feel the bat.” pic.twitter.com/Deks9cvpfh

An extra-inning 5-4 loss on Saturday meant that the Yankees had lost back-to-back series. On Sunday, they were unable to shake off the disappointments from the previous games and suffered another 5-4 defeat and got swept by the Rays.

This marked the first time the Rays had swept the Yankees in a 3-game set since April 2021. This was their 6th loss in their last 7 game. The team is also 0-6 for the season in one-run games.

One player who struggled in this series was Aaron Judge. While the reigning American League MVP did hit a 2-run home run in the 9th inning, he went 2-for-10 in the 3-game series. In the press conference after the game, the Yankees captain expressed that the team needed to do better offensively.
We need to simplify some things at the plate. We’re trying to hit every single pitch we see up there and getting ourselves in some bad counts and bad situations.
Aaron Judge said as per Bryan Hoch

Social media reacts to Yankees getting swept by Rays
On Sunday, the Tampa Bay Rays completed their first sweep of the New York Yankees since 2021. This result sparked several wild reactions against the 27-time World Series winners.

Many users on X called out the team management once again. Manager Aaron Boone faced the heat of the fans as many slammed him. One user wrote, “Boone getting out managed again,” while taking a swipe at him.
Check out that and some other reactions from X below:
0-6 in 1 run games this early into the season😭 No clutch hitting at all, boone getting out managed again by divisional opponents and we are still employing mcmahon, grichuk, caballero, escarra and jazz🤣 Call up dominguez and jones let the young studs play not these old bums

garbage team, complete mismanagement by boone and cashman refusal to bring up better talent is abhorrent…mcmahon has no business on the field, escarra should be either, glad you decided to run a broken team back again, thinking they are good enough…

Aaron Boone might’ve just managed his worst series as Yankees manager

Boone got schooled in the game of baseball by Ray's manager Kevin Cash. He manages with intelligence and baseball IQ, Boone manages with a binder of nonsensical stats and numbers.

It took 15 out of 162 games for me to not want to watch another game the rest of the season. I hate everything about this organization

Their next assignment sees them take on the Los Angeles Angels in a 4-game series. The AL West side is 8-8 for the season, having won the series against the Cincinnati Reds.
Yankees not the only New York team struggling
The New York Yankees are certainly not having a good time at the moment. The 2024 American League Champions have suffered 5 straight losses. However, they are not the only New York side who are struggling at the moment.

The New York Mets have lost 5 games straight. The Queens-based side was swept aside by the Athletics in a 3-game series.
In the series, the A’s outscored the Mets 16-6 and recorded two shutouts. The NL East side, who were 7-4, is now 7-9 for the year.

For the Mets, things do not get any easier as their next opponents are the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 2-time defending champions are 11-4 for the season, but did lose on Sunday against the Texas Rangers. After this, they take on the Chicago Cubs.
