Folarin Balogun’s red card in the round of 32 clash against Bosnia and Herzegovina has sparked nationwide outrage. Leading the USA charge is none other than Super Bowl winner Jason Kelce.

Balogun’s third goal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup gave USMNT the lead right before halftime. The break didn’t stop USA from piling the pressure on the Bosnians.

However, around the 64-minute mark, Balogun received a red card for stepping on Bosnia defender Tarik Muharemovic’s leg, leaving his team to survive with just ten players.

Balogun came into the Bosnia game on the back of scoring two goals during the group stage. The former Arsenal striker, who now starts for Monaco in the French top division, added to his tally early on Tuesday through a 45th-minute opener.

However, a reckless tackle on Muharemovic resulted in Balogun receiving a red card. This decision from the referee shocked the entire nation. Former Eagles center Jason Kelce expressed his disappointment on X/Twitter. Kelce tweeted:

Man, somebody help me. That foul looked incidental from Balogun, shouldn’t a Red Card be given if there is either intention to foul, or an action that is aggressive and unsafe in nature? Didn’t feel like Balogun was out of control or anything, just looked like it kind of happened.

One by one, notable names from across the country shared the grievance online.

Several others pointed to the inconsistent refereeing decisions during the World Cup. One commenter drew parallels with Lionel Messi’s challenge on an Algerian player in Argentina’s opening fixture. Messi avoided a red card.

The ten-man USA team hung on for dear life as the Bosnians now applied the pressure. This left gaps in the defense, and the USA exploited them. Around the 82nd mark, Malik Tillman scored as fans inside the San Francisco Bay Stadium went into delirium. The game ended in a 2-0 victory for USA, advancing to the round of 16, where they will face Belgium.

After the game, Kelce posted an NSFW tweet to celebrate USA’s victory:

Ball don’t lie [expletive].

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino refused to accept Balogun’s as a red card offense. Pochettino said:

That was a normal action in football. That happened by accident, and it’s never intentional… For me, it’s about the intention. If the intention is damage to the opponent, then okay, I understand, but that never was. It was a normal action in football.

Unfortunately for Pochettino and the USA team, FIFA rules prohibit them from challenging the referee’s ruling in this case.
