Daniil Medvedev failed to make the second round of Wimbledon. On Friday (June 3), the Russian ace suffered a 6-7(4), 6-7(5), 5-7 defeat at the hands of Jan-Lennard Struff.

The win helped the German improve his head-to-head record against the former World No. 1 to 2-8. Medvedev, a two-time semifinalist at SW19, also suffered an early-round exit last year (lost in the opening round).

I should do better. I didn’t manage to serve exactly the way I wanted. I didn’t manage to play the way I wanted in the tie-breaks, because even if you’re serving for the set or whatever, you can still win the set after. He was better in the important points today. I am really disappointed.

Daniil Medvedev said at the press conference

The Russian ace has so far reached four finals on grass, winning one title, the 2021 Mallorca Open. This season, he has so far played three finals, winning the Brisbane International (beat Brandon Nakashima) and the Dubai Tennis Championships (beat Tallon Griekspoor), but lost the Indian Wells Masters to Jannik Sinner.

Up and down, and a bit more on the down side lately. But what can I say? I’m really disappointed because I felt like I could potentially do well at Wimbledon. It’s not only about the result. It’s also about the game you play. I know that when I play well, I can make a good result or a good match.

Daniil Medvedev added

Struff will next be facing Hubert Hurkacz, who knocked out Tommy Paul. The winner of the match will square off against defending champion Sinner or qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki. Struff and Hurkacz are tied at 1-1 in the head-to-head matchups.

Sinner, who defeated Carlos Alcaraz in last year’s Wimbledon final, is chasing his sixth title of the season. He completed the Career Golden Masters before his shock French Open second-round defeat.

Medvedev last won a Big Title at the 2023 Italian Open (also his career’s first clay-court title). Before arriving in London, the 2021 US Open champion played two grass-court tournaments. He lost to Kamil Majchrzak in the semifinals of the Libema Open and to Daniel Altmaier in the quarterfinals of the Halle Open.

Daniil Medvedev picks the best Grand Slam tournament

Daniil Medvedev has reached multiple finals in two Grand Slam tournaments, the Australian Open and the US Open, winning only in the final Major of the season in 2021 by defeating Novak Djokovic. At the French Open, the 30-year-old is a one-time quarterfinalist, having reached that stage in 2021. He made the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2023 and 2024.

At the press conference after his Wimbledon upset, Medvedev was asked to pick his favorite Grand Slam tournament.

I would say that all four Grand Slams are beautiful in their own way. It’s just that with the clay issue, I don’t like Roland Garros too much because it’s difficult for me to play there. Wimbledon is definitely the most beautiful. But for example, if we talk about the crowd at Arthur Ashe, which can be either against you or in your favor, I don’t think there’s a more electric crowd.

Daniil Medvedev said at the press conference

Medvedev will next be playing on the North American hardcourt swing. Last year, after losing in the quarterfinals of the Citi Open, Medvedev fell in the early rounds of the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters, and his run at the US Open ended in the first round.

The last time Medvedev reached the semifinal of a Major was at the 2024 Wimbledon. He has so far won seven Big Titles (one Major, one ATP Finals, and six Masters 1000s).
