Reason Behind Sheamus Shockingly Departing WWE After a 19-Year Tenure
Sheamus reportedly rejected the TKO-compliant restructured deal and decided that was it for him in WWE.

Sheamus, who was one of the longest-tenured wrestlers in WWE, has departed the company after almost two decades of staying. The Irishman boasting a Hall of Fame resume was said to have swiftly rejected the restructured deal that the company offered him. Hence, for those wondering, it couldn’t be deemed a release.
However, as just mentioned, the 48-year-old was approached to accept a pay cut, to which he didn’t agree and consequently parted ways with WWE. This was first reported by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, who iterated that the former world champion still had months remaining on his contract.
Sheamus is set to leave WWE as his contract is expiring, myself and @FightfulSelect have learned.

However, there’s no significance to it, as Sheamus has already been moved to the alumni section of the company’s roster on its official website. It also needs to be mentioned that the Dublin-born wrestler wouldn’t have to bother about the 90-day non-compete clause, as he wasn’t released and rather mutually parted ways.

That means he’ll be free to sign elsewhere the moment he’s legally able to do so. The co-host of WrestleVotes Radio implied a downward spiral in Sheamus‘ relationship with WWE since the moment he got his theme song changed. It was reported in the aftermath that he was one of those who had constantly tried getting his original entrance music back.

In fact, he once stated in an interview with Chris Van Vliet that “I’m tired of asking. I’m all out of asking.” Nonetheless, now that he’s no longer with WWE, the fans would want to know about his future in wrestling. While he’s still jacked for someone who’s pushing his 50s, ‘The Celtic Warrior’ has endured a tough time in recent years with injuries holding him back.
He last wrestled a match in November 2025 on an episode of Raw that happened to be John Cena‘s last as an active wrestler at Madison Square Garden. That night, Sheamus joined forces with Cena and Rey Mysterio to take down The Judgment Day.
Who knew it would, in hindsight, be remembered as Sheamus’ last match in WWE? ‘The Great White’ then underwent shoulder surgery in December, and he therefore remained inactive this year.
Sheamus and his unfulfilled dream of being an Intercontinental Champion in WWE
Sheamus and his fans will rue the fact that he could never win the Intercontinental Championship in WWE. The former Brawling Brutes leader had been chasing it for the past few years but failed every single time. He holds the unwanted record for having the most unsuccessful attempts at trying to capture the IC title.

He even pointed that out in one of his recent posts on X. It reignited the hope among fans that Sheamus would chase the said mid-card WWE title once he returned to the ring, only for them to find out just a day or two later that he had departed the company. Sheamus had some of the most physical matches of his career while being on a manhunt for the IC title.

Who could forget his series of matches with Gunther, with their most acclaimed showdown from Clash at the Castle in 2022? Even though Sheamus failed to dethrone the then-Intercontinental Champion, the veteran wrestler earned the respect of the English crowd filling up the Principality Stadium in Wales.
Almost everyone was on its feet to applaud the resolve shown by ‘The Celtic Warrior’ to push a relatively younger and more agile Gunther to his limits. They got to be in the same ring at WrestleMania in 2023 with the addition of Drew McIntyre. They tore the house down and put on the WWE match of the year contender with their hard-hitting wrestling.
But again, it was Gunther who managed to keep the Intercontinental Championship, denying Sheamus the glory of becoming an Grand Slam Champion at the Grandest Stage of Them All. His match against Bron Breakker at Saturday Night’s Main Event in January 2025 was the last time he contested for that coveted belt.
