It has been one and a half weeks since Caitlin Clark aggravated her back injury. In the meantime, her Indiana Fever have gone on to win two straight games.
She sustained that injury when she got off a three-pointer and Mercury Forward Valeriane Ayayi landed in her shooting space. When she was working herself back to her feet, she held her back.
After being checked by the medical staff, she eventually left the game. Since then, the Fever has made it clear that she is recovering. But they did not give any specific timeline as to when she would return.
That is when things got feisty among fans as they felt that the team was done doing her justice. In the meantime, Clark addressed the discourse around Alyssa Thomas and her fiancé, particularly the hateful bullying and death threats.
But the point guard also made it clear that she will not be playing in their next game against the Las Vegas Aces. This was the start of the road trip, and the Fever wanted to continue their winning form.
In nearly two dozen games, the Fever have never been able to win one battle against the Las Vegas Aces. This time, though, it was different, as Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston managed to make it a memorable outing.
The team won by 16 points, which ended up surprising quite a few people. This capped off a second straight win, where they outpaced their opponents by more than double digits. That is where the conversation around Caitlin Clark restarted.
Fans express concerns as Fever win without Caitlin Clark again
Last season, when Caitlin Clark was injured for more than two-thirds of the season, many fans pointed out that the Indiana Fever may have been playing better without her.
Their run to the semi-finals was no joke, as the team was using its space, freedom, and unpredictability to full effect, giving hope that this team could actually do something better with Clark in the lineup.
However, fans pointed out that this is another instance when the team proved that they play better without Clark. After head coach Stephanie White mentioned in the locker room winning speech that they registered the fewest turnovers of the season, fans lost it.
They felt that the team was not doing what was needed to make the most out of their point guard’s skills. They claimed that White’s coaching style was not conducive to their superstar playmaker’s abilities. With more question marks than answers, fans reacted to this second straight win, examples of which are below.
That is straight up CC shade.

If they blow the doors off teams without CC…. Coaching ain’t the problem!!

The Fever offense was aesthetically pleasing to watch tonight. Also, the offense just flows better without Caitlin Clark in the lineup.

They don't guard the same way they do when Caitlin is in. They triple and double team. That's why the game looks like it flows better but the stats say they are better when Caitlin is in.

I want everyone to notice how much harder the Indiana players play when Caitlin Clark is out. Do you think the coach has divided the locker room and has players convinced Caitlin Clark basketball is not the way forward? It seems they play with more effort & energy when cc is out!

Steph White's system absolutely works better without Caitlin Clark…

Why I've said it from game 2 last year…
You either choose Steph or CC…
No, it was obvious they missed Clark’s abilities out there. Aces were missing their best play and the game was tight most of the game!

It's clear that the Fever with CC & without CC are 2 completely different teams stylistically
— Mick (@DBGyt_) July 6, 2026
I don't think they're up in this game if they tried to play this style with CC. Steph's system relies a low maintenance PG that doesn't need the ball and just passes side to side…
In Stephanie White’s defense, when the Fever made the run to the semi-finals last season without Caitlin Clark, she used high school and college schemes to get the best out of the team.
But when her most important player is on the floor, the Fever uses complex schemes trying to eke the best out of the 2024 assists leader. It is possible that these winds are not much more than just a flash-in-the-pan situation.
Caitlin Clark could be ready in time for the Mercury game
When Caitlin Clark talked about her health, she revealed that she was feeling better every day. But she, too, did not place a definite timeline on her return.

However, she did say that one of the possibilities is for her to return in the second of their upcoming back-to-back games. The first of those is against the Los Angeles Sparks.
The second of those is against the Phoenix Mercury. It would be ironic for the two-time All-Star to return against the team that has been the subject of a lot of controversy involving her.
But as Clark mentioned in her recent interview, she does not want fans to harass the Mercury or any player in the WNBA. Therefore, it might not be a cold moment when she returns to the court after all.
