Dustin Poirier is one of the most decorated veterans in UFC history despite never winning undisputed gold. The Louisiana native became a fan favorite through memorable performances using his boxing style. However, his retirement came under scrutiny following his public drunkenness arrest at Atlanta’s airport. Poirier has now addressed the incident while discussing his personal struggles.

Poirier was arrested at Atlanta’s airport and charged with public drunkenness after police responded to reports of a disruptive individual. Authorities alleged he appeared intoxicated and failed to comply with repeated instructions from officers. The former interim lightweight champion was later released, and the incident quickly attracted widespread attention following his retirement from competition.

Poirier later apologized on social media for his behavior during the Father’s Day incident and accepted responsibility for his actions. He remained silent afterward as news reports and footage of his arrest spread widely across social media. The Louisiana star has now revealed that his father’s lifestyle and long-term behavior were major factors behind his emotional state that day at the Atlanta Airport.

He’s ruined his marriages, he’s ruined his relationships, he’s ruined his friendships, he’s ruined his relationships with his family, with his kids… You know, he’s been in jail plenty of times for alcohol-related stuff. If I can paint a picture of what you think of a classic drunk or alcoholic. Very selfish and continues to go back to it. He’s actually homeless right now.

Poirier has often spoken about his struggles with depression, particularly after retiring following UFC 318 in 2025. The former interim lightweight champion has openly discussed how difficult it has been to adjust to life outside competition since ending his career. However, he has now revealed that his battle with depression reached its lowest point before his public drunkenness arrest at Atlanta’s airport.

I just couldn’t stop thinking about my father. And then I started drinking in the airport, and that’s kind of what led to the incident. Years ago, I started going to therapy, and when I started feeling better, I stopped practicing everything I learned. Then I felt that feeling again, I guess you could call it depression… When I feel like that, I know I shouldn’t drink, and I drank anyway. Not that my father or anything is an excuse, obviously I did what I did, but I knew better in the moment.

Bodycam footage released by TMZ showed Poirier displaying aggravated behavior toward officers during the airport incident. One responding officer immediately recognized the retired UFC star while trying to de-escalate the situation. Additional officers later arrived before Poirier was placed in handcuffs.

Following the arrest, Poirier acknowledged the officer’s patience and fist-bumped the officer while accepting responsibility for his actions. He also revealed that he later tried to contact the officer personally. The Louisiana native wanted to apologize directly and thank him for his conduct.

Poirier’s arrest became a major talking point across the MMA community after the Father’s Day incident. Colby Covington criticized Poirier for setting a poor example for fans during the controversy. He also indirectly promoted his non-alcoholic beverage while discussing Poirier’s arrest.

However, fellow Louisiana native and UFC legend Daniel Cormier defended ‘The Diamond’ by highlighting his extensive charitable work through The Good Fight Foundation. Dustin Poirier’s recent statements have also underscored the challenges he has faced adjusting to life outside the Octagon.

The UFC veteran has previously spoken about how his wife repeatedly urged him to be careful inside the Octagon throughout his career. Before his farewell fight at UFC 318, Poirier revealed that she did not want to trade strikes with the Hawaiian superstar because of the risk of another knockout.

After his arrest, Poirier admitted he feared losing everything he had built throughout his career and personal life. He also revealed his wife noticed changes in his behavior years earlier. Those concerns led ‘The Diamond’ to consult a neurologist, where testing revealed unexplained changes in his brain.
