Cristiano Ronaldo said Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2016 triumph means as much to him as winning a FIFA World Cup after Spain brought his final World Cup campaign to an end with a 1-0 Round of 16 victory in Texas on Monday.
The defeat marked the end of Ronaldo’s World Cup career, with the Portugal captain having confirmed before the tournament that the 2026 edition would be his last appearance on football’s biggest stage.
Speaking to reporters after the match, the 41-year-old reflected on Portugal’s elimination and acknowledged that the one major trophy missing from his glittering career will remain out of reach.
That’s football, that’s the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, and you have to move on.

Ronaldo also explained why Portugal’s historic European Championship victory in 2016 holds the same value to him as lifting the World Cup. “The truth is, the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016 (Euros), which for me is just as significant as a World Cup, honestly,” he said.
He added that he would take time to decide the next step in his career following Portugal’s exit from the tournament. Spain largely neutralized Ronaldo throughout the knockout clash. The veteran striker registered three shots but was unable to find an equalizer as Portugal’s World Cup journey ended in the Round of 16.

Ronaldo finished the tournament with three goals, scoring a brace against Uzbekistan in the group stage before converting a penalty against Croatia in the Round of 32. He ended his final World Cup campaign without registering an assist.
The defeat also ensured Ronaldo would end his playing career without a FIFA World Cup title despite winning league championships and UEFA Champions League trophies with Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, along with Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2016 and UEFA Nations League titles.
Cristiano Ronaldo signs off from the World Cup with Portugal’s greatest international records
Cristiano Ronaldo’s international journey began on August 20, 2003, when he made his Portugal debut against Kazakhstan as an 18-year-old. Less than a year later, he scored his first international goal during UEFA Euro 2004 before being appointed national team captain ahead of Euro 2008.
Over the next 23 years, Ronaldo became Portugal’s all-time leading scorer before surpassing Ali Daei in 2021 to become the highest-scoring player in the history of men’s international football. He concludes his Portugal career with world record totals of 233 international appearances, 146 goals, and 10 international hat tricks.

Earlier in the 2026 tournament, Ronaldo became the first player to score in six different FIFA World Cups after finding the net against Uzbekistan. He finishes his World Cup career with 11 goals, the highest tally by a Portuguese player, moving ahead of Eusébio’s nine.
Ronaldo also became the only footballer to appear in six FIFA World Cups and six UEFA European Championships. He captained Portugal to its first major international trophy at UEFA Euro 2016 before leading the nation to UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.
His international resume also includes the record for most goals in UEFA European Championship finals with 14, the Euro 2020 Golden Boot, and 41 goals each in FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship qualifying.
Although the FIFA World Cup remained the only major international trophy missing from his collection, Ronaldo leaves the tournament as Portugal’s most accomplished international player and the holder of multiple world records accumulated across more than two decades in national team colors.
