The NASCAR Cup Series race last Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway saw some wild wrecked that many thought warranted penalties. One of them was Trackhouse Racing’s Shane van Gisbergen wrecking Richard Childress Racing rival Austin Hill in laps 41 of the race. Mant accused the Kiwi of taking revenge on their run-in in San Diego, that cost SVG the win.

2014 Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick shared his thoughts on the incidents in the most recent episode of his and Will Buxton’s Fox Sports podcast, Speed with Harvick and Buxton. He asserted that the incident looked like a deliberate move seeking revenge and it isn’t a good look on the three times Supercars champion.

Yeah, it looked like SVG was repaying a favor for San Diego. A moment that they had. You see Austin Hill in the fence right here off the front burner, a front bumper of SVG.

Kevin Harvick said on his podcast.

The ex-SHR driver then highlighted how Shane van Gisbergen needs to be more careful regarding his actions as he should be making enemies at this stage of the season as his final-16 entry is still not guaranteed. Kevin Harvick also asserted that the No:97 team overall is clearly frustrated with the No:33 Chevy of Austin Hill over their past run-ins.

Yeah. And you know, I think right now. SVG just doesn’t need an enemy right now. I know that they’re probably frustrated with some of the things that have happened with Austin Hill, whether it was during the race or whether it was from San Diego, whatever it was.

The Fox Sports broadcaster pointed out that SVG’s 2026 will be ruined if he let the beef grow, as Hill is someone that is infamous for aggressive racing. He would get back on the Trackhouse driver in the upcoming races, making it hard for the No:97 car to score points on ovals, which he desperately needs.

I mean, he was definitely not cutting him any slack, to say the least. But SVG sits right on that bubble. And if Austin Hill just decides to wipe him out one weekend or spin him out or make it hard on him, it’s going to make it tough on that championship. And that’s where the focus, in my opinion, should be.

Kevin Harvick asserted.

Why NSASCAR didn’t penalize Shane van Gisbergen and Austin Hill over the drama?

Despite the controversy NASCAR decided to not penalize SVG, as well as Hill who door slammed the driver under yellow. They didn’t see any egregious issue with the Kiwi’s move while Kyle Busch’s replacement driver was given some slack owing to him being too emotional in the moment.

There will not be a penalty to the 97 [van Gisbergen] on this one… So, we will have Shane van Gisbergen and Austin Hill in the hauler this weekend to have a discussion… There is not.  We look at that as emotion.  I asked Elton Sawyer, any penalty there?  I imagine that’s just an emotional thing… We are letting that one go as well.

They also didn’t penalize Zane Smith for the controversial Carson Hocevar wreck to the surprise of many. It was good decision, considering punishing either one of the drivers would’ve resulted in more controversies. Instead, they are looking to have a talk with the drivers and give them a serious warning about keeping things clean.
