Patrick Mahomes could not make it to Atlanta to watch Lionel Messi and Argentina face off against England in the second semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Regardless, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback rooted for Messi.
One look at Mahomes’s Twitter account and anyone would realize the level of admiration he has for Messi. Argentina trailed for nearly half an hour before Messi set up teammate Enzo Fernandez to equalize with just five minutes of regulation time remaining.
Mahomes tweeted, “WOW.” And just when the game fans began to gear up for an extra 30 minutes of football, Messi displayed his class once again. He floated a pass with his weak foot inside the England penalty box for striker Lautaro Martinez to score with a header. Mahomes expressed his excitement with the “mind blown” emojis.

The game ended in a 2-1 victory for the defending world champions. Even though Messi did not score any goals—he hasn’t scored since the round of 16—the 39-year-old assisted two for his teammates. Mahomes posted “the GOAT” meme after witnessing Messi’s performance.

This wasn’t the first time Mahomes has praised the Ballon d’Or winner. He watched Messi and Martinez take down the Swiss 3-1 at Kansas City Stadium.

Messi signed with MLS club Inter Miami in 2023. During the 2024 season, the Argentine led the Miami team against Sporting Kansas City in KC. Mahomes waited in the stadium corridor to speak with Messi. The two great athletes exchanged pleasantries, and Mahomes told Messi to enjoy himself.

Patrick Mahomes gave his honest thoughts on being ranked the second-best quarterback by NFL executives, coaches, and scouts
Earlier this week, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler released his annual top 10 quarterback list after consulting with several NFL coaches, executives, and scouts. Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen emerged as the number one quarterback on the list, much to the surprise of many. Mahomes found himself in the second spot.

The three-time Super Bowl champion provided his honest opinion on the list while appearing on Yahoo Sports Daily. Mahomes said:
Yeah, I mean you understand it [the rankings]. Coming off injury and we didn’t play as well as we wanted to the last few years. You’re gonna drop in the rankings of some sort. But at the same time, there’s a lot of good quarterbacks on that list and I’m just happy to be a part of it.
"You understand it." 🤷

Regardless of the position, Mahomes was hot on Allen’s heels. According to the ESPN poll, Mahomes received 41.5% of first-place votes, compared to Allen’s 34.1%. However, Allen’s averaged a ranking of 2.10 per ballot, which helped him steal away the top spot.
As Mahomes noted, his ACL injury may have caused the slip. That being said, Mahomes is ready to prove the doubters wrong in 2026.
You’ve got to go and prove it every single year, so it’s my job this year to prove why I can jump up in the list back to number one.
One NFL quarterbacks coach said that Mahomes “still puts fear in people like no other quarterback.” He added:
His skill set combined with his will to win puts him at the top.
Mahomes must make the 2026 season count by winning a fourth ring, because this year could be Travis Kelce’s last season in pro football.
