Lionel Messi and Tom Brady’s appearance together at Fanatics Fest in New York took an unexpected turn when the discussion shifted to Messi’s viral photograph with a baby Lamine Yamal.
The seven-time Super Bowl champion and Argentina captain appeared together at the event on July 17, ahead of Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Brady asked Messi about the now-famous photograph from 2007, which showed a 20-year-old Messi holding a five-month-old Yamal during a charity photoshoot in Barcelona.
The photograph was taken after Yamal’s family won a raffle connected to a UNICEF charity event. The event allowed their infant son to be photographed with a Barcelona player, with Messi being selected for the photoshoot.
The image resurfaced online before the World Cup final because Messi and Yamal are now set to face each other nearly 19 years after their first meeting. Brady called the photograph “very prophetic.” Messi also spoke about the remarkable coincidence during the news conference. “That photo is incredible. The fact that we’re both playing in the World Cup now is crazy.”
The Argentina captain also discussed Yamal’s development since the photograph was taken. The Spain international joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy several years later and made his senior debut for the club in April 2023 at the age of 15.
Yamal also inherited Barcelona’s No. 10 shirt, which Messi wore during his historic career at the club. He later played a key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.
Messi acknowledged Yamal’s status as one of the world’s leading young players but made it clear that Argentina would try to stop him from making the difference in the World Cup final.
He’s one of the best in the world right now. I wish him luck because his success will be Barcelona’s success. We’ll try to keep him from playing at his best. Spain has a great team, not just him. He’s a tremendous player – a global star. He’s 19 years old and has his whole career ahead of him. I wish him the best, but we’ll give it our all to ensure he doesn’t become champion this time.

Several athletes, apart from Tom Brady and Lionel Messi, appear together at the 2026 Fanatics Fest
Lionel Messi and Tom Brady were among several major sports figures who appeared at Fanatics Fest in New York. Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Spain captain Rodri also attended the event.
Former England defender Rio Ferdinand and actor Kevin Hart hosted the event, while tennis legend Novak Djokovic and NBA star Kevin Durant joined Brady in asking questions during the news conference.

Brady also had a separate on-stage confrontation with YouTuber and WWE star Logan Paul during the event. New York Knicks player Karl-Anthony Towns intervened and separated the two.
Messi and Yamal will now meet on the biggest stage in international football when Argentina faces Spain in the FIFA World Cup final on July 19th at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
