When Jalen Brunson led the New York Knicks to end their 53-year NBA championship drought, there was no denying the fact that the city would crown him as their King.

The entire team did their job, as everyone chipped in to ensure there was no way that they were going to miss this glorious chance. The San Antonio Spurs wanted to extend the Knicks’ championship wait, but it was the point guard who made it clear that there was going to be no doubt.

Winning the championship brought the city’s fans the joy that they had been seeking for a very long time. It was labeled as something much better than when the New York Giants won two Super Bowls in this millennium.

Now, as they prepare for their title defense, there is no doubt that the Eastern Conference has suddenly become a lot stronger than it was last year. But until someone knocks the Knicks off their throne, there is no doubt that they will be treated as royalty.

If there was any doubt that the treatment would fade, a recent video shows otherwise. The clip shows Michael Porter Jr. arriving at the Beltane, a cocktail bar in New York. Before he could enter, the superstar forward was asked to check in with the host.

When the host was looking through the reservations for him, Jalen Brunson arrived with his wife. But the Finals MVP did not have to wait and was ushered in immediately.

Fans react to contrasting treatment of two New York superstars

When Jalen Brunson walked in, other patrons standing around yelled, ‘Go Knicks.’ The security also had a wide smile on their face seeing the champion guard and his wife come through. But Michael Porter Jr. did not get that welcome.

The reason this clip left fans in stitches was that the latter is the leading superstar for the Brooklyn Nets, another team that plays in the state. They saw one New York basketball player be treated similarly to other guests, no matter how many millions of dollars he makes.

At the same time, they saw another New York player get treated like a King. Reactions to these clips have largely followed that emotion, with fans trolling MPJ for essentially being a nobody in front of Brunson. Check out examples of those reactions below.

The problem is that even if Michael Porter Jr. were to win a championship for the Nets, it is likely that they will not get the same respect as Jalen Brunson, or any New York Knicks player, gets. The Nets are always treated as the little brother, and that is likely to stay that way unless they win multiple championships in a short span.

Barack Obama is proud of ‘King’ Jalen Brunson

Basketball fans are not the only ones who believe that Jalen Brunson has earned himself royalty in the city of New York. While speaking on the All The Smoke podcast, former President Barack Obama said this:

All those years, and all that commitment. Real proud of him. Let me tell you. I know he’ll never have to pay for another meal again in New York. He’s the king of New York.

Barack Obama said

Both podcast hosts, Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson, agreed with the Hooper In Chief’s statement, commenting that the 2026 NBA champion has made himself immortal for the city’s residents.
