When LeBron James had his options laid out in front of him, there was the tantalizing prospect of playing alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green on the Golden State Warriors.
Winning games and potentially a championship alongside his longtime rival and one of his closest friends would have been a dream for any basketball player. After all, their time together on the Paris Olympics team brought the two Akron natives to a point where not only did they enjoy playing together, but their mutual respect grew.
That, and the early rumors that the Warriors were looking to land Anthony Davis to lure the league’s all-time leading scorer, left many believing that this was a done deal.
However, it was far from that. The Davis trade rumors started to fade, and so did the franchise’s chances. The odds only rose after Curry and Green publicly declared their pitches. Despite that, every insider started to claim that the Warriors were no longer at the front of the pack.
Then, the news broke that James had decided to take his talents to Philadelphia. What this means for the dynasty team is that they have to regroup and rethink their future.
That’s why you don’t envision anything until it happens. There’s a lot of moving parts.

The two-time league MVP’s reaction while speaking with The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II suggests that somewhere he is disappointed that his team lost out on the chance to sign LeBron James.
Now, he and his team have to rethink how to work towards their championship goals now that the league’s balance of power has shifted to the East.
Stephen Curry might not have high hopes for his Warriors
Had LeBron James decided to join the Golden State Warriors on a similar bargain-basement deal that he signed with the 76ers, Stephen Curry and his teammates would be feeling giddy about their prospects for next season.
Instead, apart from the disappointment of missing out on the league’s all-time leading scorer, there is the reality that the once dominant franchise may not be a favorite heading into the 2026-27 season.
The through line, which is hard on anybody in this situation, especially with us keeping this thing together, is knowing that when Jimmy got hurt and Moses got hurt, the whole calculus of everything changes. How do you get through their absence and still stay at a certain level? And then how that goes into this year. It’s the same deal. So I’m a realist on that.

It seems the 38-year-old is resigning himself to the knowledge that when Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody return from their devastating injuries, the Warriors might be in a hole deep enough that they could forget about coming out of it in time.
The Western Conference is a lot stronger than when they first traded for Butler, making it harder for the Warriors to power through. Had LeBron James joined, Stephen Curry knows that they could have powered through until the two injured players return. But now, the reality is that the team might be at best on the fringes.
Stephen Curry’s Warriors are in danger of slipping out of the playoffs this season
Stephen Curry’s worries about next season may not be exaggerated. The Golden State Warriors will be without two of their best players, Jimmy Butler and Moses Moody, for the better part of next season.

The former tore his ACL in January, whereas the latter tore his left patellar tendon a couple of months later. Both should be returning to the court some time in January 2027. The real question is how the team will cope wth their absence.
They have drafted a player who can slot in and start immediately, but it will be foolish to think Yaxel Lendeborg will be able to overcome the production of both Butler and Moody.
With many West contenders retooling their squads, it might be a miracle if the Warriors can stay in the playoff spots. In all likelihood, they will be lurking in the play-in spots. The fear is that they could slip out of contention by the time their two players return.
