Kansas City Chiefs head coach reacted to the Bieniemy family tragedy
Eric Bieniemy coached the Chiefs quarterbacks and rookies the first two days of training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. However, Bieniemy returned to Virginia after hearing the news and was subsequently absent from Monday’s practice.

Head coach Andy Reid reacted to the shooting after Monday’s practice. Reid said via Nate Taylor of ESPN:
Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy. Mia is stable, which is a plus. We all love EB, and you hate seeing those things happen… We’ll just see how things go. This is real life [and] you take care of that. She’s a saint, one of God’s good blessings. But things happen.

The Chiefs hired Bieniemy in the offseason after Matt Nagy stepped down as the offensive coordinator. Bieniemy has signed a multi-year contract with the Chiefs.
Travis Kelce makes his feelings clear about Eric Bieniemy
Bieniemy first joined the Chiefs in 2013. After spending four years as running backs coach, he took over as the offensive signal-caller in 2018 when Patrick Mahomes became the Chiefs’ starting quarterback. The Chiefs won two Super Bowls before Bieniemy took the same job with the Washington Commanders.
During Bieniemy’s first stint with KC, he helped Travis Kelce discover his true potential and establish himself as one of the greatest tight ends in league history.
Kelce only has love and respect for the 56-year-old. He also called EB “one of my favorite coaches of all time.” The Instagram account “Kelce Brothers” shared a message of support for coach EB.
Sending our thoughts to Eric Bieniemy and his family right now… That’s the Eric we’re thinking of today, the one who helped shape a Hall of Fame career and became family in the process. Wishing Eric, Mia, and their whole family strength and healing.
Bieniemy left Washington after just one season and returned to UCLA—he coached the Bruins RB room from 2003 to 2005 during his first spell. His stay in college lasted just one season before the Chicago Bears appointed him as their RBs coach.
Under his mentorship, seventh-round rookie rusher Kyle Monangai established himself as one of the top young RBs in the league. Bieniemy left Chicago to take the vacant OC job at KC in January 2026.
