LeBron James saw himself linked to a number of teams after he left the Los Angeles Lakers and became an unrestricted free agent in the summer. Many expected he would return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time and end his career in the team where it all began.
However, James had other plans. While he was linked to the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors as well, he surprised the NBA world by signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.
Former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins made a harsh declaration about the Cavs moving forward after missing out on the four-time champion.
They had a face to face with LeBron James and it didn’t work. This is worse than Brad Stevens losing Giannis to the Miami Heat and Pat Riley. All the Cavs were missing was a LeBron James. Now they got nothing. I think the Cavs, they probably won’t sniff another championship for the next ten years.

The Cavs are coming off their best postseason performance since James’ departure in 2018. However, it was a disappointing end as they were clean-swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.
Kendrick Perkins, who played one season with the Cavs, believes that the Cavs needed James to get over the hurdle of winning a championship. Cavs head coach Kenny Atkinson even indicated that they are in the hunt for their former superstar. Unfortunately, they ended up as the biggest losers after he ended up in Philly.
Cavs came closer to landing LeBron James than anyone
LeBron James has already established himself as the greatest player in Cavs history. He spent 11 seasons with them and took them to five NBA Finals over two stints. The King led them to their first and only championship in 2016, which cemented his legacy as one of the, if not the, greatest players of all time.
Their connection goes far beyond just basketball. NBA insider Shams Charania revealed that the Cavs were the only franchise granted an in-person meeting with James before he joined the 76ers.
The Cavs, the Sixers, the Miami Heat. Those were the finalists, really, for LeBron James. But interestingly enough, in the cloak of secrecy, LeBron James granted just one team an in-person meeting in free agency, and that was, sources tell me, the Cleveland Cavaliers. They sat together, talked about his basketball legacy, what a reunion, a third stint in Cleveland would look like.

Granting the Cavs an in-person meeting shows the level of respect James has for the organization. They share so much history together, but it looks like he wanted to embark on a new journey in the end.
Draymond Green on why LeBron James did not join the Warriors
While James was heavily linked to the teams of the Eastern Conference, it was reported that one Western Conference team stood an outside chance. It was the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors showed interest in signing the 41-year-old, and Draymond Green himself threw a Warriors pitch at him during their time together in the summer. But the Dubs came out empty in the end.

However, Green believes James did not join the Warriors because he couldn’t get over their past rivalry.
I ultimately don’t think Bron was ever able to get over the history and I understand it, I get it.

Many NBA fans were hopeful to see James team up with Stephen Curry in Golden State. But considering the history and rivalry they shared, it was always going to be a hurdle to get over.
