DiJonai Carrington caught a lot of heat after her hard foul on Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. But what she wrote on Threads in the immediate moments after returning to the locker room is what blew the lid off this discourse.

Immediately after the foul, Cunningham shoved the Chicago Sky guard in retaliation. But soon, the usually feisty star walked away. After she reached her bench, the Missouri native could have continued to talk trash, but did not.

Maybe DiJonai Carrington not doing the same stopped the incident from becoming more than it needed to be. After all this, at most she would have received some backlash on social media. But instead, it reached a point where analysts and former players started mocking her.

Writing the words ‘White Privilege’ while tagging the Indiana Fever on Threads was the reason she drew such reactions from people across the country. Fans, other professional athletes, members of the media, and even some associated with politics slammed the 28-year-old.

They, as did Sophie Cunningham, felt that there was no need to make it about race when her foul was indeed the reason she was rejected. Later, Carrington tried to change the narrative, but it was already too late.

In their last game against the Golden State Valkyries, a Baylor guard went to the officials and had a fan kicked out for allegedly saying something to her. What made DiJonai Carrington trend again on social media was that less than two minutes later, that fan returned to his seat.

Fans tear into DiJonai Carrington for needlessly kicking out a fan

When a fan is asked to leave their seat after a player complaint, they speak with arena security to review what led to the situation. Arena security has generally kicked out unruly fans, and some have even faced bans.

But in this instance, since the ticket-holder returned to his seat, basketball fans understood that arena security didn’t find DiJonai Carrington’s complaint serious enough to throw him out.

They took to social media to ask whether the former second-round pick is making a habit of playing the victim whenever she can, as has been evident in two recent incidents. Check out examples of those reactions below.

DiJonai Carrington has been trying her best to change the discourse around her ever since that post on Threads went viral. However, with this incident coming to light, it will take a lot longer, and some other events, for fans to stop going after her.

DiJonai Carrington hit another player in the face

The Minnesota Lynx traded for DiJonai Carrington last season as they knew her perimeter defense is something any championship-contending team needs.

But a year later, the team felt they were going to take a step back; they didn’t need her presence. That is what led the guard to sign with the Chicago Sky. However, lately, her highlight plays have become rarer. But her mistimed blocks are becoming more common.

The Sophie Cunningham incident may have been the most famous. But what that incident and the ‘White Privilege’ comment did was push social media pages to look for other such egregious fouls.

They did not find one in Carrington’s previous game when the guard exploded for a career-high 26 points. But in this game against the Valkyries, those pages found two instances where her defensive effort fell short.

One was when her left hand smacked Valkyries guard Cecilia Zandalasini on the cheek. Even if one argues that it was a mistake, critics would ask what her left hand was doing when her right was within striking distance of the ball.

But another instance was even more viral. This time, when Valkyries guard Tiffany Hayes tried to lay the ball into the basket, Carrington tried to stop her. But instead of the ball, the latter ended up smacking Hayes in the face.
