Julio Rodriguez and the Seattle Mariners would like to forget what happened on Tuesday night against the Milwaukee Brewers. A huge mental lapse from him in the 8th inning summed up the day for his side as they got crushed 22-0 by the NL Central side.
The Mariners were 13-0 down after 7 innings. With the game way beyond their reach, manager Dan Wilson brought in position player Leo Rivas to pitch and replaced relief pitcher Nick Davila. The third baseman was brought in to save the arms in his team’s bullpens.
The Brewers were in no mood to slow down though. Luis Lara smashed a 3-run home run and extended the team’s lead to 16-0. They kept on adding runs to the scoreboard through singles and a bases loaded walk.
With the bases still loaded and the team 19-0 up, Christian Yelich flew a pitch to center field. Julio Rodriguez came under it and collected it for the second out. Andrew Vaughn tagged up from third base and scored on a sacrifice fly to make it a 20-0 game.
As he took off from third, Rodriguez had a mental lapse in the outfield. He forgot how many outs were there are threw the ball into the stands. As a result of this, the runners advanced two bases leading to another run.
🚨 THIS CAN'T BE REAL… Julio Rodríguez just threw a live ball into the stands with two outs.

As if things weren't going poorly enough for the #Mariners…
Bases-loaded walk → 19-0
Sac fly → 20-0
Rodríguez error → 21-0
Bloop single → 22-0

A single from Lara saw the Brewers put up 22 runs on the board. Rivas finished his 1 inning in relief by giving up 9 hits, 9 runs (7 earned) and 1 home run.
In the top of the 9th inning, the Brewers gave the pitch to Gary Sanchez. The Mariners were unable to do much against the position player. Rodriguez grounded out for the first out and went 0-for-4 in this game. This loss turned out to be the biggest blowout win in a shutout since 1888.

For the Mariners, this was the biggest loss in their franchise history. The 22-run margin surpassed their previous worst defeat, a 21-1 loss against the Houston Astros in 2019.
Dan Wilson under heat following Mariners’ huge loss
All Dan Wilson could do in the 8th inning was watch his team get torn apart by the Milwaukee Brewers. Following this massive 22-0 loss, the Seattle Mariners manager found himself under some heat.

The 2026 season has not been a memorable one for the Mariners. After reaching the ALCS last year, many expected them to make a deep playoff push once again.
However, the team has been inconsistent through the campaign. A 1-0 win over the New York Yankees last week snapped a 6-game losing run.
After losing the series opener against the Houston Astros, the M’s picked up back-to-back wins against their division rivals. This series win pulled them 4 games behind the Astros.
Just when the offense was showing signs of waking up, they got humbled. Until the 5th inning on Tuesday, they were just 1-0 down and within touching distance.
In the end, the Brewers put up 22 runs through 22 hits. Meanwhile, the Mariners put up just 5 hits, with 2 of them coming against position player Gary Sanchez in the 9th inning. This defeat left them with a 59-67 record and put even more pressure on the shoulder of Dan Wilson.

While speaking with the reporters after the game, Wilson simply claimed that the game got out of their hands and that it was a tough one to think about.
Obviously, not how we wanted to start this game. It just got out of hand. They put up a lot of runs tonight, and we were quiet offensively. It’s a tough one to even think about.
Dan Wilson said as per MLB.com
For the team, there were not many positives to take from this game. They will like to forget about this one soon and hope to have a strong response on Wednesday.
