AJ Brown left the Philadelphia Eagles in the offseason after spending four years with the NFC East franchise. Brown earned multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors and played a key role in the Eagles’ 2024-25 Super Bowl glory.

Brown would have stayed in Philly if he hadn’t had a fallout with quarterback Jalen Hurts. As the Eagles transitioned from a passing team to a run-first offense, Brown reception tally took a massive hit. Even though he never publicly requested a trade, there were many signs that he wanted to leave the team.

The Eagles finally answered Brown’s call and traded him to his favorite team, the New England Patriots. As fortune would have it, the NFL set up a preseason friendly between the two teams. And for that reason, New England welcomed the Philly franchise for joint practice sessions ahead of their anticipated clash at Gillette Stadium.

All eyes were on AJ Brown, and the mercurial wideout did not disappoint. Every time Patriots quarterback Drake Maye connected with his WR1, the crowd cheered at the top of their lungs.

AJ Brown dominated the Eagles defenders

Brown faced Quinyon Mitchell countless times at the Eagles’ training ground. But the outlook of Thursday’s practice in New England felt different.

Almost every time Drake Maye got the ball airborne, Brown scored a touchdown, and most scores came against Mitchell’s coverage. According to Carlos A. Lopez of Patriots media, Brown scored a touchdown in 1-on-1 drills, 3 in 2-on-2s, and one in an 11-on-11 team drill. It was a horrible outing for the All-Pro cornerback.

Drake Maye makes his feelings clear about AJ Brown

The Patriots underwent a massive overhaul at the wide receiver position in the offseason following the release of Stefon Diggs. They signed Romeo Doubs but waited for the Eagles to make a move. On June 1, the Patriots sent a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick to the Eagles to acquire Brown.

Ever since, Brown has been a big influence on the team. After the latest practice, Drake Maye revealed that AJ Brown makes his “life easier.” Maye told the media:

A receiver like that, who carries that much weight, just find ways to get him the football. Like I say all the time, I try to get the ball into their hands because they make me look good. That’s the #1 thing with A.J., he’s made a lot of plays in his career.

Maye established himself as the Patriots’ undisputed starter last year. The former 3rd overall draft pick led the Patriots to a 14-3 finish in the regular season, winning the franchise’s first AFC East crown in the post-Tom Brady era. Maye completed 352 passes, a league- and career-high 72% completion rate, a 113.5 passer rating, and averaged 8.9 yards per throw, for 4394 passing yards, 91 touchdowns, and just 8 interceptions.

The Patriots subsequently defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in the wildcard round, the Houston Texans in the divisional playoffs, and the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship game to claim conference supremacy. However, they faltered in the Super Bowl against the Seattle Seahawks. Maye threw for 70 completions for 828 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. He was also sacked 21 times, fumbled 7 times, and lost four times (all NFL postseason records).
