After back-to-back walk-off wins over the Chicago Cubs, the Seattle Mariners got crushed 19-2 on Sunday. In this game, starting pitcher Bryce Miller struggled once again. He ended up matching an MLB feat not seen in around 136 years.

Randy Arozarena, who hit a walk-off home run on Saturday, started the game with a leadoff home run. The hosts then took a 2-0 lead in the second inning following a throwing error by catcher Carson Kelly.

In the 3rd inning, the Cubs came flying out. A solo home run from Michael Conforto halved the deficit. After Kelly flew out and Pete Crow-Armstrong went down swinging, Miller gave up 3 successive walks.

He walked Seiya Suzuki, who then stole 2nd base, Michael Busch, and Alex Bregman to load up the bases. Ian Happ then crushed a grand slam down the right field line to put his team up 5-2.

In the 5th inning, Miller gave up 3 successive walks once again. While there was no grand slam this time, Bregman grounded out to force in another run. After that, manager Dan Wilson replaced the pitcher.

The right-handed pitcher gave up 7 walks and 6 runs in 4.1 innings. The Cubs then went on a rout in the 8th inning and put up 9 runs. A solo home run from PCA and a grand slam by Pedro Ramirez saw them take a 16-2 lead.

The scoring did not stop there. In the 9th inning, the NL Central side put up 3 more runs and won 19-2.

While Miller was not at fault for the 13 runs after he left, he did have a poor start once again. He thus became the first pitcher in over 136 years to have back-to-back starts where his team lost by 17 or more runs.

The last time such a feat happened was in 1890. As per ESPN Insights, George Van Haltren of the Brooklyn Wonders was the last pitcher to go through this unwanted stretch.

This defeat of Miller came a few days after the Milwaukee Brewers won 22-0 against the Mariners. In that game, Miller went 4.2 innings and gave up 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits and 2 walks.

The positive for the Mariners was that they won this series. Despite getting outscored 28-13, they won the first two games and claimed an important series win against one of the contenders in the NL.

He threw 104 pitches on Sunday and was tagged with 6 earned runs despite giving up just 2 hits in the game. 5 of those runs came through the 2 home runs he surrendered.

As per Adam Jude of The Seattle Times, Miller has given up 27 earned runs over 30 2/3 innings in his last 6 starts. During this run, he has an 8.01 ERA, has allowed 31 hits, given up 15 walks, and has 21 strikeouts. In the postgame interview, he simply claimed that this was the worst stretch in his career.

Probably the worst four-start stretch I’ve had.

Bryce Miller said as per The Seattle Times

To make matters worse for him, the defeat on Sunday came on his birthday. The Texas-born star turned 28 on Sunday. His birthday did not go as he would have hoped.

The question now is: what do the Mariners do with him? With the team calling up top prospect Kade Anderson, some are urging him to be placed in the bullpen and taken off the pitching rotation.

For now, the Mariners remain 3 games behind the Houston Astros and the Texas Rangers with a 62-69 record. Surprisingly, the AL West is the only division to not have a single team above .500 at the moment, with both the Astros and Rangers having a 65-66 record after 131 games.
