Jalen Brunson is on top of the NBA world at the moment. He led the New York Knicks to their third championship and their first one in 53 years. Not only was he their leader, but he was also named the Eastern Conference Finals and Finals MVP during their run.

There is no doubt that after winning the championship and the Finals MVP award, Brunson’s stock value is now higher than ever. Some may even go as far as to call him the best player in the league today after his performances during the playoffs last season.

Naturally, the conversation shifted to where he stands among the best players in league history. Some NBA fans have even placed him above Derrick Rose. While Rose is a former MVP, he never won a championship in his career.

Listening to those conversations, Draymond Green disagreed. He believes that the comparison is unfair to Rose’s greatness.

Jalen Brunson just won a championship as a first option. And what I’m certain of is all of you basketball people hold Jalen Brunson in a higher regard than you hold Derrick Rose. Now, that’s not the regard that I hold Derrick Rose in. But I watch you people saying Derrick Rose isn’t even a Hall of Famer, which I think is blasphemous. They are what they are. I just don’t agree with them.

Brunson proved his critics wrong after his performances last season. After leading his team to a championship as the number one option, there is little to no doubt that the Knicks guard will be a future Hall of Famer.

While his performances were historic and definitely praiseworthy, many have been ranking him above some of the best players in the league. However, Draymond Green made it clear that he still has a lot of respect for Rose. The four-time champion wanted to show how winning a championship can change the way fans remember a player.

Both Jalen Brunson and Rose have achieved greatness in the league. While Brunson is still playing and can achieve more success, Green found the comparisons between the two to be absurd.

After showing some love and appreciation to Rose, fans reacted to Green’s comments on social media.

Most fans disagreed with Green’s comparisons. While they acknowledged Rose’s achievements, they highlighted that winning a championship and a Finals MVP means more than winning the league MVP.

Derrick Rose’s career was cut short by injuries

In his prime, there were very few players in the league that could match up against Derrick Rose. Drafted by the Chicago Bulls as the number one pick in the 2008 NBA draft, Rose took the league by storm and led the Bulls to the playoffs in his rookie season.

His athleticism was off the charts, and many regarded him as the most athletic point guard of all time alongside Russell Westbrook. In just his third season, Rose was named the MVP of the league. He became the youngest MVP winner in league history at the age of 22 years and 7 months.

Unfortunately, he tore his ACL in 2012 and was never the same player again. Constant knee injuries derailed his career and impacted his availability and production. He announced his retirement after the 2023-24 campaign and ended his career without a championship. However, the Bulls decided to give their former superstar the ultimate honor by announcing that they would retire his No. 1 jersey.

Rose may not have fulfilled his potential, but his achievements and accolades prove that he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame in the future. Comparing players of different eras should involve careful consideration and, more importantly, respect for the body of work these players built out in their careers.
