As the New York Yankees and the New York Mets faced each other on an emotional day on Friday, a fan invaded the field. The unidentified man ran onto the field in the middle of the game, drawing huge boos from fans at Yankee Stadium. As he was taken off the field, Yankees fans threw beer cans at him.

Friday marked the 25th anniversary of the devastating 9/11 terror attack in New York, which resulted in the deaths of 2,977 people. To commemorate this event, the two New York baseball teams took to the field and kicked off an emotional 3-game Subway Series in the Bronx.

Spencer Jones opened the scoring for the Yankees with a single in the 1st inning. After the Mets tied the game at 1-1 in the 2nd inning, the hosts found themselves leading 5-1 with a 3-run home run from Cody Bellinger in the bottom of the 2nd inning and a solo home run from Ben Rice in the 5th inning.

It was in the top half of the 7th inning when the game was halted. A single from A.J. Ewing earlier in the inning had pulled one run back and made it a 5-2 game. The Mets then had the chance to turn the game around with bases loaded and 2 outs when Francisco Lindor stepped up.

The shortstop went up 3-2 in the pitch count against Brent Headrick. As he prepared to face a crucial pitch, a fan interrupted the game by running onto the field.

According to reports from The New York Times, the fan entered the field at around 9:11 p.m. through the left-field seats and ran across center field. The security officials quickly tackled him to the ground and detained him. He was carrying a flag of Palestine.

While the fan was down on the field, Yankee Stadium erupted with chants of “USA“. Some even threw NSFW reactions and slammed the invader. As he was escorted off the playing field, some supporters threw beer cans at him in anger.

Once the game resumed, Lindor lined out to Headrick to end the inning. In the end, the Yankees emerged as 6-4 winners and took the series opener.

Jeter was joined by ex-manager Joe Torre and his 2001 teammates Jorge Posada, Paul O’Neill, Tino Martinez, Scott Brosius, and Mariano Rivera for the pre-game ceremonies.

Earlier in the day, the former Yankees captain penned an emotional 25-word message on social media. In the post, he paid tribute to those who lost their lives and the first responders on that day.

25 years later, we continue to honor the lives we lost on 9/11 and the heroics of our first responders. We will never forget.

Speaking of 2001, Jeter and the Yankees were hoping for a 4th successive World Series title. Due to the attacks in New York, the season was pushed back one week, leading to the first postseason game in November.

Game 4 of the World Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks saw Jeter hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 10th inning after Martinez tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the 9th inning with a 2-run home run. When he stepped up to the plate, the clock struck midnight, and the calendar flipped to November 1.

This walk-off home run earned Jeter the title of “Mr. November” as the Yankees tied the series at 2-2. Ultimately, they fell on the final hurdle as the D-backs walked them off in Game 7 to win their first World Series title and stop the Yankees’ charge.
