Although Alexander Zverev won the French Open and the US Open this year, he did not face Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner in either of these events. Alcaraz skipped the French Open due to his wrist injury, and Sinner crashed out in the second round.

Sinner skipped the US Open due to his knee injury, and Alcaraz crashed out in the quarterfinals. Novak Djokovic lost in the early rounds of both these events. Zverev seized these opportunities, reached the final, and won the titles.

In spite of ending the Sincaraz dominance in Majors (Sinner and Alcaraz won 10 Grand Slams since 2024, with their streak breaking in Paris), Zverev has still not become a part of the Big 3 with Alcaraz and Sinner, said former player Nicolas Escude. The Frenchman, however, believes that Zverev will only join them if he starts defeating the World No.1 and the World No.3.

He’s not yet part of the Big Three with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. He’ll be part of it when he wins Grand Slams by beating them. When Novak Djokovic started to compete with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, he truly became part of the Big Three the moment he started beating them. That’s not the case for Zverev yet. But the season he just had was incredible.

Nicolas Escude told Eurosport France

Zverev also reached the final of Wimbledon, where he lost to Sinner, registering his 10th consecutive defeat at the hands of the Italian ace. Sascha now trails 4-11 in the head-to-head matchups versus the five-time Grand Slam champion. Against Alcaraz, Zverev trails 6-7.

It was the seven-time Grand Slam champion who stopped Zverev from reaching his career’s second Australian Open final this season, defeating him in five sets in the semifinal. Alcaraz then beat Djokovic in the final, also completing the Career Grand Slam.

Greg Rusedski calls Alexander Zverev the best player in the world

Alexander Zverev, after his US Open win, said he doesn’t consider himself the best player in the world. He believes that if everyone is healthy, Jannik Sinner is far ahead of the rest, as the 25-year-old has already clinched six Big Titles this season. But Greg Rusedski is not of the same opinion.

You can only play who’s there. The numbers and the records for winning two slams, one final and one semi- that’s what’s the definition of the year. Sinner has been incredible in the Masters Series. Unbelievable. But health is your wealth. It doesn’t matter if the guys are there or they’re not. He had the pressure to win when he won the French.

Greg Rusedski said on his Off Court with Greg podcast

Apart from the two Major finals, the 29-year-old also reached the title clash of the Madrid Open but lost it to Sinner. The South Tyrol native lifted titles in Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Wimbledon, and also completed the Sunshine Double this season.

So for me, yes, Sinner is the world number one, but from the tennis and the results at the majors, he [Zverev] is the best player on the planet at the Majors. That’s where we define greatness. There’s very rarely a player who wins two majors in the year who isn’t the world number one.

Greg Rusedski added

Carlos Alcaraz, after completing the Career Grand Slam, beat Arthur Fils in the Qatar Open final. He lost his No.1 ranking to Sinner after losing in Monte Carlo. Zverev can reach the top of the rankings table, as he is 1,810 points behind Sinner. Before this season, Zverev had played three Grand Slam finals, including at the US Open in 2020, losing the match to Dominic Thiem.
