On Thursday, there was a scary scene at Citi Field as Jared Young was involved in a terrifying collision. The 1st baseman collided with his teammate Nolan McLean and lay flat on the ground for a while. Medical reports later diagnosed him with concussion symptoms.

The incident took place in the 6th inning when the Philadelphia Phillies were up 1- 0. While going up against McLean, outfielder Justin Crawford hit a slow roller around first base.

Both McLean and Young went for the ball. This resulted in McLean inadvertently colliding with Young, with his knee catching the head of his infielder. He also stumbled a few feet on the ground before getting back up quickly.

Young, however, stayed down. The medics quickly rushed towards the field to help him as he remained motionless in the dirt for a while. A few moments later, he was put on a stretcher and taken to a hospital. As he exited the field, the 31-year-old put his thumbs up for the crowd.

McLean returned to the mound after the collision and struck out Garrett Stubbs to end the inning. He was later removed from the game.

The Phillies eventually won 3-0 and took the series opener. The main focus, though, had shifted to the health of Jared Young. After the game, interim manager Andy Green provided an update regarding him and said that his CT scans had come back negative.

Results have come back negative, so in that sense it’s very positive. Still experiencing like real concussion symptoms right now, but has full use of his extremities and feels at this point in time like we’ve avoided the scariest outcomes.

Andy Green said regarding Jared Young as per SNY

McLean, meanwhile, refused to speak with the media and turned down a chance to share his thoughts while being in an emotional state.

This is Young’s 4th season in the MLB. While he has played a few games in the outfield and as the designated hitter, most of his time has been spent as the first baseman of the team.

As per stats from Baseball-Reference, he has played 84 games at first base this season. If he remains healthy, he has a good chance of reprising this role next season. With the bat, he has 9 home runs and 39 runs with a .266/.330/.429 slash line.

Francisco Lindor reacts to Jared Young’s scary collision

What happened on the field on Thursday with Jared Young sent chills down the spines of some people. Shortstop Francisco Lindor was one of them. In the press conference after the game, he admitted it was scary to see him like that.

After the collision with Nolan McLean, Young stayed motionless for a while. His head was down on the ground, and he seemed to be out cold for a few seconds. The medics then helped him onto the stretcher and carted him off the field.

It is scary to see one of our brothers, one of the most respected and loved teammates we have here like that. … Seeing him like that not reacting, and then seeing the trainer holding his neck, it’s scary. It was a scary moment.

This collision also raised a few questions regarding the lack of communication during the play. Whether either of them called for the ball or not is uncertain at the moment.

This development comes just a day after the Mets were questioned regarding their defensive plays. In the game on Wednesday, the trio of Bo Bichette, Juan Soto, and Francisco Lindor all came running for a fly ball in shallow left field.

However, none of them made the catch. Bichette ducked away, thinking Soto had the ball covered. Soto believed his teammate would extend the glove. Meanwhile, Lindor was a few steps away from the duo. Looking back at that moment, there could have been another major collision.

The New York side will now hope for Young’s quick recovery. The defeat on Thursday was their 5th successive loss, leaving them with a 69-84 record.
